Well that was a dissapointment. We were pretty excited for Valentine's day here but this was a truly mixed experience, with a couple highs, but way more lows.
Beans and salsas: This was a pretty cool surprise. Right off the bat, we were brought complimentary beans and 6 or so house salsas, all excellent, particularly the xoconoztle.
Champagne with fruit: Just like it sounds. It was decent Tattinger.
We decided to start with soups...
French onion: Inexplicably served in a... Bread bowl? So I get a giant round of bread with about 3 bites of soup. The bread does absolutely nothing except make the soup starchy. There is a reason that French onion is typically served in a crock. The best bits, the cheese that gets crusty under the broiler is impossible to eat because it's now permanently part of the bread. The soup itself was bland and uninspired. Complete mess of a dish.
Tomato: The flavor was marinara, not tomato soup. Not very good. We didn't finish either of them.
We went for the Huachinango crudo for an app: lovely. Just perfectly acidic with rustic crackers, generously portioned. Best thing we had all night. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from here.
Burrata: This one is partly on us, but the server was pushing this dish hard, so we went for it. Unsurprisingly, the tomatoes in February taste like tomatoes in February, sharp and mealy. The burrata itself was fine, but not house made, or super high quality and luxurious, typical food service grade. The balsamic has no reason to be there, and it's the typical condiment grade stuff. Should have skipped it.
Braised beef rib, to share: This had potential, the rib itself was tender and smokey, delicious. Unfortunately, they covered it with gravy that had to have been the world's most complete source of sodium. It just made the meat a salt bomb. Served with absolutely incredible house made tortillas in a cool volcanic rock crock. So close to being great, ruined by liquid salt.
Fries: Served with seasoned food service grade fries. Ice cold, rock hard. Awful. But they should be making their own fries, come on this is a steakhouse.
Seating: Man oh man. So we are seated at a little two top about 2 feet from another table. And on this romantic Valentines dinner, that cost hundreds of dollars, they go ahead and sit right next to us a family with a kid, which pulls out an iPad and has it on with movies playing at full volume (even with the extremely loud music of the restaurant, it's absolutely un-ignorable). It was just comically bad. They moved tables just as we were finishing. We didn't complain or anything, maybe a server finally realized what a ridiculous situation it was. Do people not know headphones exist?
Drinks: the two for 1 deal is nice, and the drinks are... Passable? They use the word mixology a lot, but it's typical overgarnished, over sweet fare. Good selection of tequila and rum, craft beer is absent except for one sell-out brand that is no longer craft, not worthy of mention. The wine list is comically marked up, so we stuck with the hard stuff.
Service: Friendly and cheerful, knowledgeable, but absent. It took over 45 min to get the check, and another 15 to bring the card reader. Yep, an hour. Getting drinks, etc just took forever.
Skip this one. If you do come, don't expect a ramantic date, it's more of a club vibe. Grab the Huachinango,...
Read moreMe and my partner enjoyed a evening dinner here. Service was very attentive. We sat in the rooftop area which at night was a young upbeat environment with lights and loud music which made it hard to hold a conversation. Dinner was fantastic. Started with the Aguachile which were perfectly made and flavorful, main course I had the bone marrow ribeye tacos which were absolutely delicious. Even to final desert. We did have cocktails one each but I was told about some promotion that lead to like 3 rounds. I felt it was an upsell that I let slide as I was enjoying my dinner with my partner. Overall a delicious dinner just be cautious of upsell. Be ready to spend some money as this dinner is a splurge. AMEX...
Read moreFood is great but couple of points. For business dinners make sure to prepare to order and share stake. Only big portions available. On our visit, only 3 type of dark beer was offered (they said also had Guinness but later told us it was warm still) so we got stuck with expensive options and not so good.. They had an event in the night and my guess I they were saving the alcohol for that. And you have to keep an eye of waitress. They ask to tip 15% when it's already a 3600 pesos bill with 2 ppl.. As I've said. Food is great, provolone cheese is excellent and steak is...
