A cool concept & definitely needed in Johannesburg. Interesting wines on the menu & unique food choices. The menu is quite limited, which is fine - but then it would be best to have everything available on the menu. The night we went, the only dessert on the menu was the apple tart which we were all excited to try & the waitress even took our order after explaining the size of the tarts, only to return minutes later and say they weren’t making the tart on that day. It would have been great to know that at the beginning of the evening so we wouldn’t get our hopes up. Waiting time for the wine was also a bit long. Also - if I’m comparing photos of my beef tartare to those of others posted, it doesn’t look the same - which is a bit disappointing.

I think it is getting there, but not quite yet. I made the mistake of going there with a big group (10 people) in a busy night. This is a wine bar not a dinner place. The service was slow, the food was average, small and relatively expensive (except for the mussels, which were excellent) and everything came VERY late and at different times 20-30 min difference. To be fair I then went back on a Sunday, with only four people and the experience was completely different, quick, attentive and delicious. The wine selection is actually good and the place is vibey and nicely decorated. Probably one of the better options for wine in the city, ideally for a date night.

The food at this restaurant is truly some of the best I have ever eaten - and I consider myself quite the foodie, having visited many of SA’S top locations, as well as many locations around the globe known for excellent cuisine. We really could not fault a single dish. The absolute highlights & must try dishes in my opinion are the ceviche, scotch eggs & prawn toast. We enjoyed these dishes so much, we actually ordered a second round of each. The staff were super friendly, helpful, and the restaurant layout is well planned & aesthetically pleasing. Acid is definitely worth a visit & we will be back!

Things didn’t start well when we had to flag down a waiter to show us to our table after aimlessly Standing at the entrance for a few minutes - there was absolutely no one there to greet us when we arrived. It went from bad to worse when we weee seated next to a table that was incredibly loud and obnoxious and who seemed to be getting drunk on drinks from elsewhere. We had to repeatedly ask smokers not to blow their smoke on us and our food as they stood not even a foot from our table on the crowded balcony. We ordered a glass of white wine which was full of floating bits of cork and other material - when we asked the waitress to return it we were rather rudely told that it was normal for the wine to contain ‘sediment’. in 17 years of drinking and enjoying wine I have never encountered floating bits of cork that were passed along as normal sediment. When we queried this being included on the bill we were told that they couldn’t do anything about it because it was “not to our taste”. The few glasses of red from hemel en arde valley were good and the food was average having taking forever to come out and not arriving together.

All in all a very disappointing experience for a restaurant/wine bar that is sorely missing on the Joburg landscape. While I am able to forgive teething problems at the beginning, how you deal with customers is ultimately what people remember. Perhaps we just had an unlucky experience but I would not recommend...

The Good: wine selection is excellent, food had great flavour and the service (once dialed in) was fine.

The Bad: Some seating problems, took about 30 minutes to get a drink order in and overall expensive given the experience.

The Story: We reserved for Acid's valentine's evening, not knowing much other than seeing the restaurant in passing. They went with a set menu, which was a nice idea. Unfortunately the staff were simply not able to handle the complexity of this, a large queue formed with people waiting for tables (with bookings) during this time people being seated were mostly not being served, so things got off to a bumpy start.

Once resolved service was smoother and staff were friendly. the main issue was that the set menu was expensive (think marble), positioning acid in the fine dining arena which it just isn't (or wasn't). Dishes were served cold, knowledge on the wine was average.

We knew the price going in, and we're happy to pay for high quality food and service, but simply put Acid struggled to reach the high bar they had set for themselves.

In retrospect probably a good spot for a nice glass of wine before moving...

Hands down the most shockingly unprofessional behaviour from a restaurant owner I've ever witnessed.

Moments after our waitress came to our table to tell us our final order was on its way, some of the owner's friends sat at the table next to us. The owner told them them the kitchen was closing and last orders had been taken. Her friends said they'd eat whatever was available, then the owner left and returned with what was clearly our order for her friends' table.

20 minutes later, our waitress told us the kitchen was closed and they couldn't give us our order. We asked for the bill. After another 20 minutes waiting to pay, our waitress said the chef was re-opening the kitchen and making our order to go, but at that point we'd already been waiting 40+ minutes for a dish we'd ordered two hours earlier.

The owner's lack of professionalism and blatant disregard for her customers is astounding. Honestly, who takes a patron's order to give to their friends? Leaving her staff to scramble while she has a jol is also really poor form. An...
