Restaurant Review – El Rey, Altea (Alicante) Date of Visit: 29/03/2025
We recently had the pleasure of dining at El Rey in Altea, and I have to say—this place is a hidden gem for authentic Mexican cuisine.
Drinks Ordered:
2 Margaritas – Classic, well-balanced, not overly sweet.
2 Margarita Sunrise – The non-alcoholic version; my wife had this and really enjoyed it. They were bloody delicious
1 Chelada Beer – Refreshing and traditional, very good!
1 Cola Zero – Standard.
Food Ordered:
Tacos al Pastor – Absolutely superb. As someone who grew up in Mexico with a Mexican mother, I can confidently say these are among the closest I’ve had to proper Mexican tacos outside of Ireland. Full of flavour, mild heat, and perfectly cooked.
Tapas Supremas (Nachos) – We ordered these without the chicken. They were simply fabulous. Rich with flavour, perfectly crisp, and generously topped.
Tostadas de Hongos (Mushroom Tostadas) – My wife had these. While mushrooms aren’t my thing, she was blown away by how good they were.
Chicken Flautillas (Flautas) – Crispy, delicious, and generously filled. Another standout dish.
Service The staff were genuinely warm, attentive, and professional. Service was smooth throughout, and we felt well taken care ofAtmosphere: Relaxed, bright, and welcoming. A perfect spot for enjoying a casual but high-quality meal.
Final Thoughts: I’ve eaten a lot of Mexican food in my time, and El Rey truly stands out. The flavours were authentic, the ingredients fresh, and the execution flawless. It’s incredibly hard to find real Mexican food done well outside of Mexico, but this place nails it. My wife and I were both thoroughly impressed—from the cocktails to the tacos.
Total Bill: €78 (well worth it)
Rating: ★★★★★
Highly recommended. Hats off to the team—well done...

Update: El Rey now offers Seitan Steak as a vegan main course. It is amazing!! Plus a couple of vegan starters and a vegan dessert! As always, friendly, attentive service with delicious, quality food in a beautiful seafront setting.
Seafront, stylish, Mexican restaurant, open 7 days a week, with vegetarian section of the menu. The waiter was friendly and knowledgable about vegan options.
We ordered the vegan jackfruit tacos, which were tasty, but quite spicy, and the bean tacos which were perfect, with a separate pot of piri-piri sauce. The vegan options were mainly vegetarian dishes without cheese/sour cream etc. Could be improved with vegan substitutes for cheese etc.
The venue is stylish, with inside and outside seating, on the seafront, overlooking the beach.
The prices were in line with the area. The main courses were 15€-18€, or there was a 3-course lunch for 25€ with vegan options.
Overall, it was a positive experience, we will definitely eat here again.
UPDATE: We now eat here regularly, and is our go-to place for...
Read moreThis spot was recommended by a business colleague, and I’m glad we checked it out. We will be back. The restaurant faces out to the Altea beach and walkway. The space is cozy with the seats and design.
The staff was very helpful and informative since this was our first visit. Coming from Southern California where we have excellent Mexican food, my expectations are high and this spot really delivered.
The guacamole and chips are very tasty. Could use a bit more chips, but good. Also, would love some pico de gallo to go along with it.
I enjoyed their piba colada with tequila which was delicious! I was very happy with the shift away from the typical rum.
For our entrees, we had the Pollo Mole and the Chicken Verde Enchiladas. Both were very good and full of flavor. My only picky thing is the chicken in the Mole. I’m used to boneless chicken being used which makes it easier and very flavorful in the sauce, but it...
