When I saw the 4 out of 5 stars, I insisted on leaving my opinion. How could such a wonderful business be rated as only 4 stars? Let me explain.... The way Costco works is quite simple - you purchase a membership and then take advantage of not only their fantastic pricing, but also the quality of their inventory and services. You literally have no liability when purchasing something, because their return policy is the best in the industry! Unless it's electronics (which have a different time span to be returned), you can return something a year later, especially if you were dissatisfied with something. The customer always comes first. Costco is able to offer low prices by purchasing huge lots for the lowest price, then they mark things up a small amount..... say 10% over their cost, resulting in the absolute lowest price you'll ever find anywhere. If the price ends in a "99", it's priced normally. If it ends in a "97", it's discounted, either by the manufacturer, as is the case of their coupon sales, or an item is being discontinued. They make their money on membership sales and not from merchandise sales. Thinking about a special anniversary or upcoming wedding and need a diamond ring? Knowing that Costco only marks up a small amount over their already low price, you can rest assured that you have purchased the least expensive, exquisite stone. Best of all, you can return it! Ask the manager for a private showing of their specialty stones.... Employees treat you great, because they are treated well and paid well too. The petrol stations normally offer the lowest prices in the city. The tire shop will sell and install good quality, fresh tires (old tires for cheap prices is quite common and can result in poor handling and wear) while you shop. The pharmacy offers the lowest prices anywhere, with good quality medicines. The meat department is absolutely the hidden gem of the store! Carefully, Costco teams up with the highest quality suppliers and provides fantastic meats, fish etc. The rotisserie chicken is a must for the busy Mothers on the go. The cost is so low, you are actually paying almost the same price as if the whole chicken were uncooked, yet this flavor is amazing! Your family will thank you. One thing about Costco is the changing of the inventory, which forces you to purchase something now, or you may never see it again. With the money back guarantee, this presents no liability if you purchase it now, but regret it later. It's about time that Costco arrived in our lovely city! You'll see how great it really is and why all the American's are crazy about the...
Read moreI'm a huge fan of Costco...my only complaint is that they've yet to open up closer to the center of Madrid. I believe as of the publication of this comment (and for the previous few years), a location in Las Rozas has been in the works, though it has been delayed repeatedly, and its fate now seems uncertain. EDIT Costco Las Rozas is officially open and only lacks gas pumps at the moment (as of September 2020), although I have been told by an employee that they plan to fix that as soon as possible.
In any case, the Getafe location is splendid. There are times when it is quite packed, but also plenty of downtime. Google has peak times measured out very well on this very page. The store itself is exactly what you would imagine if you're from the same part of the world as me and have been to wholesale stores before - right up to the 1.25€ foot-long hotdog with a drink deal (there is a Costco "food court.")
As for the products, you can get good deals for buying in bulk, and the selection is spectacular. They also rotate depending on the time of the year. I was pleased to find maple syrup, hard pretzels, mozzarella sticks, cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory, and countless organic items that you simply can't find elsewhere in great abundance. I go once every two weeks. Through the entire month of October, and so far all of November, they even have pumpkin pie. Wow. Bagels, cinnamon rolls, and carrot cakes are also readily available year round, and they also have furniture, clothing, and technology. I feel right at home at Costco.
The downside is that there is no easy way to get there using public transportation, so you'll either need a car, or considerable disposable income to get there via Cabify, Uber, or taxi. It's a solid 25 minutes from the city center, and way outside typical operating areas for taxi drivers coming from Madrid.
Membership for individuals (not businesses) is currently priced at 36€/annum. The gasoline alone more-than-justifies the membership fee on your third or fourth trip if you fill up since on top of already reduced prices, members are offered a further 10% discount on fuel. They also specialize in tires, though I have no idea if they have better deals than other stores.
All in all Costco is by far one of the best shopping experiences in the country - again, especially if you're from my part...
