Edit: the hotel contacted our hotel room shortly after I posted this review. Initially they were very gracious when speaking with my husband trying to arrange something to make up for this experience. They then called again and insisted they speak to me personally. Of that 15 minute conversation I spent 9 minutes of it being lectured about how I can’t order meat “medium”, when I said I didn’t and it was “medium well” I was told it was perhaps a language issue. I speak Spanish and happen to know it would be “medio a bien hecho” and that this is a concept in Spanish. Not that speaking Spanish should not be a requirement to order food at an international hotel!
They didn’t seem to want to speak about how the service was poor and slow, they should have already known I was pregnant and applied their policy to only serve well done meat, and irrespective of what I ordered the meat arrived rare. It was bizarre that they thought that conversation would improve things. Clearly this hotel is either staffed by medical professionals know better than my doctor, or they have serious concerns about the freshness of their meat. I’ll leave you to decide which.
PS Shout out to Marju who was lovely with impeccable service. If we’d had her looking after us during the Gondola meal we’d have had a much better time!
————— We are staying at the hotel and booked a table at the Gondola thinking it would be a nice special meal, a cut above the buffet dinner.
We waited 10 minutes after seating for our orders to be taken. We got little amuse bouche and a basket of bread (tiny dish of olive oil though and no balsamic). Starters arrived fairly quickly and were generous portions. However, our starter cutlery was taken away as they were served so we had to use main course cutlery. After the mains arrived we had to wait for new forks to be brought to us. Totally confused service.
I had asked for my main, beef medallions, to be done “medium to well”. I’m pregnant and can tolerate some pink in my meat but no more than that. The thicker of the two medallions was rare. After a few minutes of not being able to catch a waiter my husband went up to the front and explained the situation and was told someone would come sort it out. Nobody did. After 5-10 minutes we managed to catch our waiter and explain to him.
The waiter then berated me for having ordered it “medium” saying I should have known it would be red. This waiter also kept referring to my husband’s octopus main as “fish” and brought a useless fish knife to eat it with. By the time the beef came out again said octopus had been finished, not sure why this took so long when it was the same pieces of meat. The waiter put it on the table and declared “now it’s fine” and walked off. Comically how it arrived this second time is how I wanted it originally and was not well done either. We didn’t bother staying for dessert.
When making the reservation we were asked for dietary restrictions and the receptionist carefully noted down that I was pregnant. We confirmed our room number twice when being seated. Clearly this was only used to know which room to charge to and nothing else. We were not asked about dietary restrictions any other time during the meal; I strongly recommend those with allergies/intolerances not dine here.
Overall a disappointing experience. Guests should not feel they’ve paid more for smaller portions and worse service...
