Khum Vieng Yong — Restaurant in Chiang Mai Province

Our AirB&B host recommended this place because I speak Thai and really love and know Thai food though I must say I am not that well versed in Northern Thai food. I wanted to try authentic Northern Thai food and she said this is the place she comes to when she wants real Northern Thai food. The place was far away from all the usual tourist places in Chiang Mai tucked into a cul-de-sac off a major highway and we had to take a Grab taxi to get here. When we first walked in, we noticed the restaurant was beautifully decorated in heavy teak traditional furnishings. However, we were initially very skeptical as the place was nearly empty at 7:30PM on a weekday but when the food came, we were in heaven. This is NOT your typical central or even Essan Thai food that you will find all over the world. Unless you know Northern Thai food, nearly nothing on the menu is familiar to a tourist who is used to typical Thai food in the West. In fact, I did not recognize 80% of the dishes. Our server (I think he was the owner) helped me sort through the extensive menu and we ended up choosing a number of unfamiliar but absolutely delicious Northern Thai offerings. Do not order a Pat Thai here, try dishes you have never heard of before and you will be rewarded. The menu had English but I don't think the staff speaks much English. Khum Vieng Yong is a restaurant located on 121 roads not far from Chiang Mai International Airport. Traditional foods in the north, good taste. Most of the customers here come as families and are middle-aged to the elderly who like Northern Folk Dishes. The building is a wooden house. Shop interior use materials of local appliances and local handicrafts give a Lanna atmosphere when eating with local food such as appetizer, nam phrik num chili paste, nam phrik ong with sausages and boiled vegetables, Hunglae curry, Laab roasted pork, chiangda fried with egg, turmeric pork soup and fried snakehead fish with mellow sauce. I recently dined at Khum Vieng Yong คุ้มเวียงยอง and was pleasantly surprised by the authentic northern style food. The dishes were good, and the atmosphere was enjoyable.
