Antipodea is an Australian brasserie 300 meters from Kew Gardens underground station. The interior is modern featuring a bar, indoor seating for about 60, an small outside area and an open kitchen at the back. The interior is relaxed and calm - reminiscent of a Melbourne eatery. There is parking in the adjacent streets but finding a spot at peak times can be a challenge. Antipodea is also very dog friendly. Antipodea is over priced relative to the portion sizes, but Kew Gardens is not a cheap area. A beef burger with chesse is £15.50, the pepperoni & nduja pizza is £14.95 and the barramundi fish is £16.50. The lunch menu is a combination of Turkish flat breads, all- day breakfast dishes, pizza and a handful of fish dishes. The selection of juices, smoothies and shakes is great. The service can be slow and at times aloof but always extremely friendly. Make sure you make a reservation during the weekend as it gets busy from 11AM to 1.00PM. Worth a visit if you are looking for something different to chain restaurants or pub food in the Kew Gardens area.

Dear God it was awful. A complete train wreck. In short: Don't go. It's terrible and expensive. Everything from the food to the service just got worse and worse. It was awkward. Here's what happened: Yesterday we came together, 8 friends to see each other after Christmas, see the Kew Christmas lights, and picked Antipodea because the menu looked like it would be a treat. We were so looking forward to it. It wasn't. At all. The restaurant wasn't that full but I'm guessing (hoping) our waiter was new. He took a drinks order and when he came back didn't have a clue who had ordered what. OK... Not a problem. There's eight people. The same happened with the food. Again... That can happen with a group. He then served the food for five of the eight people. When there was a bit of a confused lull he informed us that the rest will take four minutes or so. This left three people waiting awkwardly for their meal while the others began. I had received the main I ordered but none of the sides, so I let it sit there till they came. Again... This can happen but for a decent restaurant this isn't great. So, about the food... First off: Don't order the pasta dishes. Their "Large Plates" don't tell you that though the plate itself is large, the serving size of four mini ravioli at £17 is at best a starter. In fact the whole menu is overpriced and Antipodea seems to be one of those horrible places who thinks that this is justified by putting truffle on pizzas and mayonnaise. You could forgive the serving sizes if it was haute cuisine but while the choices sound fancy, what landed on the table wasn't. I ordered the lamb (at £22 without sides) which was bland, and what I discovered too late (after waiting for five minutes for my polenta side) was that it wasn't cooked pink. It was rare. And sinewy. I didn't want to make things even more awkward than they already were so I just ate it. (See picture attached.) The "pizzas" are about what you would get if you ordered a garlic bread in a decent Italian. I don't think anyone was impressed. They even screwed up the chips! My friend who had the fish and chips said the chips were undercooked. One positive: The wine and the espresso martinis were very good. But we're not done yet. At the end of the meal we waited and no one came to take the plates... For ages. We kept trying to catch the eyes of any waiter and it got awkward again. We had skipped the starters and were looking forward to having coffee and dessert before we go into Kew. After about five minutes I stopped our waiter rushing past us and asked if we could have a dessert menu. Our waiter brought the menus, left the plates and then disappeared again. We waited for another five minutes and no one came to take our dessert order. Finally, we gave up and decided just to leave. We paid the bill, bought some Anzac biscuits at the counter (which to be fair were great) and left. Not just devastated that it wasn't great but angry at how much we just paid for that. Literally none of us will be coming back. Also: You know the staff knows they've screwed up when they don't even ask how your meal was. That didn't stop the service charge being on the bill. Just avoid. It's really not worth the money.

My friend and I had tables outside, in the spring sunshine. Table service was a little slow, but they were really busy so this was understandable, and our food & drinks arrived surprisingly quickly, given how busy they were. We both had the Eggs Benedict. The eggs perfectly poached, and the yoke a vibrant red/orange - very tasty, accompanied by a superb hollandaise sauce. The ham was disappointing. It was just a thin slice of rather flavourless meat, but the eggs & sauce compensated for this. My big mistake was ordering the Lamington - and ordering "take away". Had we been dining inside, I probably wouldn't have ordered one because I would have seen how puny they were in the display cabinet inside. The first indication of the size was when my friend looked in the box and warned me that I would not be impressed. I decided to reserve judgement until I got home. If it still tasted good, then we could forgive the small serving, right? It weighed 134g vs the average weight of lamingtons I buy in London of 220 grams. There was no cream layer inside and only a thin thin scraping of jam. The sponge was EXTREMLY dry. If I had ordered it to eat-in, I would have sent it back after one bite. As it was, it ended up in my rubbish bin - and I never throw food away. I've eaten some bad cakes in my time but I do believe this one was one of the worst. Dear Antipodea Baker - please go to Blackbird Bakery to see & taste a good lamington. What was served to me was disgraceful. NB: the last photo is of what a lamington should look like. It did NOT come from Antipodea

Came here with some friends and had a nice dinner. I started with the goats cheese and onion tart which was delicious, followed by the saffron and braised ox cheek risotto with a gremolata - which needed much more of the gremolata to cut through the heavy elements of the dish. I finished my meal with the banoffee pie which would've tasted fantastic had the bananas had any flavour to them. I'm not sure what the issue was as they were certainly ripe however there was no banana-ness to them. Additionally for a quiet Tuesday night we were surprised when one member of our party was told that they had sold out of the aubergine ravioli. Although, the chef was accommodating and used the same ingredients to make a linguini. The waiting staff were also out of sorts having to be constantly reminded for drinks requests on, as mentioned already, quiet evening. With that said I'm sure this was a one off having looked at other consistent reviews and I hope to be back on a better day.

We have visited Antipodea on many occasions and I love the portobello mushrooms on toast. However, our latest visit was really disappointing - we went especially for pancake day and had some really lack lustre pancakes. The special was listed as mork pancakes with maple syrup and caramelised banana. The maple syrup wasn’t there and the banana was chopped up in the pancake (definitely not caramelised!). My blueberry pancakes were under done and I had to ask for maple syrup on the side as barely any was given - the creme fraiche listed was a smear on the top of one pancake. Both of us felt we could have made better at home. To be fair to the waitress, she noticed that the mork pancakes were poorly presented and was apologetic, however she only took £2 off the bill. £31 for a hot chocolate, tea and two lots of tasteless pancakes stung a little. I’m sorry to say it’s put us off coming back.

We booked this place as we were coming to visit gardens. We arrived on time, yet had to wait for waiters to acknowledge us(10min) and clean table for us, even though there were clearly marked reserved tables next to us. But that is not a problem. The biggest issue is staff working on the floor who prefer to chat with each other then to take care of customers. It took us 15 min to ask for food and 10 min before anyone realised we are asking for the bill. Manager was chatting with the waiter how busy they were earlier. I think what cause this kind of dismissive behaviour is including service charge on the bill-staff just don't care about the customers cause they are getting tip regardless. I always tip the place I go, but I wouldn't tip this place. Finishing the food is not bad, they might consider asking customers what level steak they want.
