My name is xiaodong, from the university of Glasgow. I am one of opium's former workers in the kitchen. I am writing to introduce opium to you, hope it will be helpful when you are choosing a place to eat.
I would say that it is one of the best Chinese restaurant in Glasgow for me,even in the UK.
The boss Jun is a really nice person. He is very strict to everything concerned with the severing food, from picking up material, creating menus to decorating dishes. I worked in the kitchen so I know that he only provides with the best food, making sure every dish fresh and extremely delicious.
The food is in a fusion style, both fit Asian and western people's flavors. There are Chinese, Thai and also south east Asian food. The menu updates constantly, you may see new dishes next time you come. It will never let you down.
The drink is also great. I don't actually know the drink well, but I tried some cocktails, they are really nice. There are also some specialized cocktails made by Daniel, really amazing. You can also try some Asian beers, good wines, spirits or teas, coffees.
The atmosphere is really nice, with good decoration, beautiful lights and nice musics. The service is also good, even in a busy Friday and Saturday. But I also recommend you come at weekdays, there will be less customers and you can get better services.
I have finished my master and I am not working for opium anymore, but I will miss this excellent restaurant. It taught me kind, optimistic, diligence and cooperation. I am really thankful.

Read moreAbsolutely loved our evening here! We were out celebrating/de-stressing, this had been on our list to try for a while and I liked the look of the cocktail menu!
We weren't disappointed! The chilli, salt & pepper ribs were easily the best ribs I've ever had! So delicious and with the perfect amount of kick! We also had the crab & chive steamed dumplings which were also lovely but next time I'd want my own portion of ribs all to myself!
I sampled 2 of the cocktails, Opium's Den and Blushing Mai, loved both but the Blushing Mai was my favourite.
A friend had recommended we stick to the small plates as they're so good which is usually what I'd do as I always prefer the starters to mains in asian cooking but we couldn't resist trying the Hainan chicken and Hong Kong beef flank and we're glad we did as both were delicious! The chicken was creamy and very garlicky (just my kinda thing) and the beef was full of flavour and so tender. Both really good quality meals with none of that horrible sugary gloopiness you get in a lot of asian places. Really fresh tasting and we will definitely be back again soon for more ribs and cocktails!
I wanted more ribs for...
Read moreI’d give less if I could. The sea bass tasted extremely fishy - not like the fresh fish taste it should have either. The juices from the fishy sauce also saturated the mushrooms and bamboo shoots (which were canned by the way) making the entire dish inedible. The waitress was nowhere to be found so we finally gave up hope of reordering and my brave husband ate the fish and I had his sweet n sour chicken (he doesn’t mind strong fishy tasting dishes but even he admitted that it was the most un- sea bass tasting fish he’d ever had). I’d love to say that his dish was great but it was quite disappointing in that the veggies were way undercooked and the sauce tasted like a prepackaged mix rather than fresh. To top it off they charged us 2.80 for the plain white rice - that was made to seem as though it were included with the meal by the waitress (who never did return to our table by the way). So waaay overpriced, very small portions, and very poorly prepared food. Will...
