Read moreFirst time eating at Taco Boy so safe to say this was disappointing. For some context I'm Mexican so my expectations are a lot higher in terms of Mexican places.
Let me walk you along what exactly happened during our dine in.
At around 1:30 pm we were seated and started looking at the menu, our server was kind enough to bring some water while we waited. Boy did we wait. There were only two servers for seating and serving, and as a past server I can say that they're obviously overworked.
It took about a total of 30 minutes to get our orders in. Not for them to make it. Just to order. Then an additional 10 minutes for the bartender to make the horchata.
The horchata, OMG. When we finally got it I was disgusted. Who puts a salt rim on a cinnamon-rice milk drink??? Did they confuse a margarita with an horchata? I was beyond offended.
When we eventually got our food, we ordered the Baja Taco with Bahi Mani and the Rice Bowl with Jackfruit Carnitas. The Baja Taco barely had any fish in it, more of a vegetarian taco than a fish taco. The rice bowl is put into a corn chip bowl, meaning it falls apart easily. Both tasted decent but were disappointing in their own way.
We ordered the tres leches for dessert, I do not recommend it. The icing was a thick layer of artificial flavoring and sugar. The cake itself was drenched in sweetened condensed milk but also some type of artificial flavoring? Tasted like gasoline afterwards.
My total was $50, without tip. That's 50 dollars I paid for mediocrity. The servers really try hard but the business is understaffing so they have to overwork for a wage that probably doesn't reflect that. The menu is too small and filled with boring dishes that probably don't taste exceptional nor reflect the price. There's more margaritas and alcoholic drinks than actual food. That should tell you what you need to know.
Servers deserve a raise, and a better workplace.
Also the pictures of the menu are outdated, they no longer have tortas and they cut the desserts...
Read morei really had high hopes for this place after reading all the great reviews i guess that tells me how much to trust asheville local’s reviews🤣 no hate to the servers at this place! our server was super sweet and we loved her! i would describe this place as that crystal hippie girl that went to your high school; cool in theory but a little bland and trying too hard. i got the al pastor taco and birria taco plate with both normal and black beans. my friends got nachos with vegan chorizo, esquite (mexican street corn), mushroom and queso empanadas, and hibiscus margarita with house vodka instead of tequila. my tacos were decent but nothing authentic more a tex mex vibe but i enjoyed it. i would say my beans and rice on the side were blander than satan’s hell itself but that would be disrespectful to satan. though i liked the tacos i judge a mexican place based on their beans and rice. my friends hated the nachos. the cheese was gluey and the toppings were not well dispersed. the vegan chorizo was very salty but at the same time not seasoned. the empanadas were nothing to write home about but the green sauce that came with saved it. the esquite was again mediocre but my friend saved it by taking it home and adding hot cheetos and hot sauce to it and eating it intoxicated. to try to save our food we asked our waitress for chipotle ranch and hot sauce which saved it. the hibiscus drink was pretty good and a lovely color. the waitress was helpful in helping us make a drink decision and switching out the tequila with vodka. worst thing of the night was the salty garlic chickpeas in the beginning of the meal. again, extremely salty and yet still weirdly underseasoned. i think the meal would’ve been improved by a fourth if we were just served grocery store salsa and tostitos. overall not a bad place if you want to spend a good amount of money on severely underseasoned but very salty tex mex (more...
