Ok,... I know. It's The Sycamore. It's Iconic. The burgers are amazing. The root beer floats are to die for made from small batch root beer. The onion rings are diced so no nasty onion strings, the sweet potato fries are soooo good (so are the curly fries) the waitstaff is sweet and the food is made right in front of you. So why the 3 stars? Let's start with no cards accepted. It is 2018. Unless you are laundering money why would you not accept cards? It's not like your prices are cheap! Hell 4 dollars for an order (small) of frozen fries I think you can afford the tiny fees of using a square reader. And my second gripe. You offer an all day breakfast sandwich. I pay 5 bucks for a coffee and a sandwich. What I get is 1 egg 2 small breakfast sausage links (think like Jones sausage links small) and a slice of cheese on a not even buttered roll. Look. I know inflation.. But really. I know what food cost is and that whole thing cost maybe 1 dollar probably not even that to make. Think maybe you could spare for an extra sausage and another slice of cheese? Maybe a little butter on the pan to make it taste like food? How are your burgers so good and your breakfast so abysmal? I will be back for burgers... When I remember to grab cash and plan to come in. So... Though I live down the...
Read moreI came here over the summer and I went back again just last week. I ordered the Dagwood, a tray of fries and a root beer. The dagwood was okay, I don't see or taste anything unique about the burger. The fries are okay as well, nothing bad about them either. The root beer on the other hand is something to talk about. It's good and it's different, it's not too overpowering or too sweet either. You can tell it's not the boxed kind of root beer. I've been making my own root beer for my restaurant for many years now and I know what's good. But other than the root beer, there's not much else to talk about. The decorations are very nice, they even have a really old cash register on display on the counter. The decoration really sets the tone for the theme of the restaurant. As for the service it is okay, it could've been better or worse. So if you come here for the food, don't expect to be blown away. But if you're here for the root beer, it's not AMAZING as some would say but it's good none the less. Will I be coming back? No, not really. Do I recommend this place? Yes but only for the root beer. An FYI for new comers, the patties here are on the thinner side something you would find at very classic...
Read moreGreat place for a burger and fries. This place is a throw back to the classic 1950-60s American car hop dinner. They have everything from malts & I e cream sundaes to root beer that is made on site. Their specialty is their hamburgers though. They are thin patties of ground fresh daily sirloin steak. They call them steakburgers. My personal favorite is the double bacon burger and a hotdog. The hotdogs are fried quickly and then put on the grill top which gives them a great crust. Breakfast is also good here. Eggs, omelets, and egg sandwiches are all a good choice here. They serve egg sandwiches all day while the rest of the breakfast menu stops being served around 11am and changes over to lunch/diner menu choices. Saturday nights during the summer they host a classic car night and the parking lot is filled with vintage classic cars and people hang outside and mingle while looking at the cars. Sycamore has also been featured on the food channel and is a regular on the best of CT list year in and out. If you haven't been here before I would highly recommend it. The small town feel of downtown Bethel combined with the nostalgic feel of the mid 20th century come together perfectly over a great hamburger...
