Bay Area | Checking Out Greek Restaurant Opa

Opa has become one of my favorite places when socializing with a group of friends or a family dinner on any occasion. The vibe here on Valentine's day was amazing. The food is always delicious but eh Valentine's special menu was even better. The Rosemary Lamb was the groups favorite. Roasted veggies were enjoyed by the vegetarians I the group. Calamari stands out as the most delicious appetizer but falafels are amazingly soft and served with a dip that makes this dish a must try. Cocktails are sometimes a miss, so you may have to try it more than once especially Aphrodite. Acropolis on the other hand was well prepared each time we ordered. In main course, sea bass, salmon, lamb skewers and flatbread were a hit with decent portions sizes and right amount of spices. Banana bread is delicious dessert and a must try dish. Overall, Opa stands out amongst the crowded Campbell downtown restaurants.

Wifey and I wanted to give this place a try being that it is super busy all the time. We walked in and added our name, 15 min later we were seated. Our server was overall very informative and took care of all our requests "with a great attitude " 5 stars. I wish I could say the same for the quality and care of the food. I ordered a Gyro with rice pilaf and got a free "yelp check in" fries with feta cheese. The fries showed up in about 5 min. Unfortunately they were lukewarm at best and tasted like McDonald's fries that you hadn't eaten in a couple hours 1 star. The Gyro looked really good but was inconsistent at best every bite had a different flavor? My 1st bite I got a mouthful of red onion that was so powerful it actually burned the back of my throat and wasted my palate. The red onion was literally 1/2 x 1 inch. how hard is it to slice onions and small thin pieces? Honestly I think people go here to buy alcohol and after drinking too much of it, they think that the food taste good and believe me it does not. 5 star service 2 star poorly prepared food.

Came back here after a long time only to be disappointed again....i got the chicken souvlaki dish with rice. If I wanted to swap the rice for a salad it was $5 more which I think is a bit of a punishment for those who want to eat a little healthier. Additional $5 is a bit much...should just be a free swap in my opinion. The chicken kabob seemed like it was fried first and the maybe charred over fire....it was a bit greasy and had that outside crisp texture like it was pan fried versus grilled. I dunno. We also ordered a saganaki which is fried cheese and were super disappointed in it. Not sure what cheese they used it seemed like mozzarella. They brought it table side and lit it on by pouring some liquid on it...the cheese sweat and created a lot of water beneath and the cheese got a bit hard after not too long. It's usually made with halloumi cheese and I don't think this was it.

Took a group of nine for dinner on a Saturday night. It seemed as though they were understaffed to handle the number of people in the restaurant. The service was sporadic and the food seemed very hastily prepared. We ordered four different appetizers including two saganaki (Flaming cheese). The Skordalia appetizer was mostly bread and one of the two saganaki was badly burnt on the bottom. The entrees were also a bit of a disappointment. Two of them were overcooked to the point of being burnt on the bottom, and most of the rest tasted thrown together. The meat in the gyro sandwiches seemed to be ground beef that was pressed very thin instead of the shaved seasoned beef that should be in a Gyros. All in all the meal was quite a disappointment. I would not recommend going there during peak hours.

We go to Campbell very often because we live nearby. I have lived in Europe for 16 years and I love the Mediterranean diet, at home I always cook with olive oil, a lot of tomato, calamata olives and fresh fish. Opa is our favorite Greek. We like to seat on the large terrace and started with Feta cheese and olives with warm pita bread. Then is hard to choose, so many options, normally I go for the Moussaka or Salmon served with garlic mashed potatoes and veguies on a lemon sauce and my hubby always go for the skewers, all but the vegetarian =) The terrace is a favorite place for many young people, perhaps a bit noisy, but it is part of the attraction of the place. I recommend it for a fun experience with good food.
