Today was my first time in Athens. My first impression was ' wow this place is beautiful'. My intention was to get take out, but when I was asked if a booth was ok, I couldn't resist the opportunity to get a closer look around, so I dined in. I live right down the street, it's not the best of neighborhoods, but walking inside Athens was like stepping into a completely different neighborhood of kind and happy people. I've never felt so comfortable in a new place. Everyone was so welcoming and the place smells so inviting. I had the gyro omelette with feta and it was the best omelette I have ever had. I got full about half way through but I couldn't stop eating till it was gone. If ten stars was an option, they'd get all ten. I will definitely be visiting again, and I'm excited to try their lunch. I feel like I found a tiny piece of heaven in my neighborhood. My mood went from cranky to sheer happiness and wonder when I stepped into this place. And I left feeling even better about life, lol, I'm still in awe over this place. Nothing but great vibes. Thank you Athens for that amazing experience. Also, in case you're wondering, their prices are not outrageously high. I expected it to be so much more expensive than it was and the quality of the food and the service...
Read moreThis place has unique decor and lots of nick nacks from a bygone era. Although the service was attentive, it took a bit to get our order of a rueben & fries and a gyro platter with only 8 other patrons in the place and two wait staff. The food wasn't that great. The reuben barley had a half ounce of meat on it, and the grilling only toasted about half the bread. The gyro platter was a disappointment, especially the gyro meat it was from a frozen block. The platter had one pita, cut into quarters. Some curls of gyro meat may be an ounce, wilted lettuce salad, and shredded cucumber mixed with yogurt and garlic. I elected to go with the home fries instead of deep-fried. These home fries were thin slices, grilled like hash browns, and lacked the crunchy browning and flavor other than salt. Baklava are from frozen. The pyhllo dough was soggy, the nut filling was emulsified too much, and had more granulated sugar than honey. For $4.99 each, I expected higher quality. This place might have been great when the founding members ran the place, but like the decor, it needs...
Read moreI think I reviewed Athens before and gave it 3 stars; I feel I should bump it up one. The reasons I gave it three stars -- and they're still valid concerns -- is that their burgers don't come with fries, and their dessert options aren't great. But... You know what does come with fries? Their cheese steaks. And those are better anyways. (Truly, theirs are as good as or better than 90% of the cheese steaks at other restaurants.) And the first time, I don't think I gave enough weight to their customer service, which has always been excellent in my five visits so far. My waitress during my latest visit was a real cutie patootie, and very helpful. And the lady who I assume is the manager or owner is a mind reader.
If they ever add ice cream and/or milkshakes, I'll give it the full five stars. Aw, heck, if I continue to get great service and delicious cheese steaks I may eventually bump...
