Came here on a whim, but I will come here on a whim no more. You must go out of your way to eat here. Although we didn't get any drinks, their cocktail menu and drinks all look great, but the main attraction is definitely the food. Pricing: Very reasonable for the amount of food they give and in the Costa Mesa area. The Thai chile chilaquiles and pork belly rice bowl were both $16. Their cocktails are definitely pricy with being as pricy, or even pricier than the entrees. Food: The food was incredibly good. Although I couldn't really tell there was anything Thai about the chilaquiles, everything was so good. This was the first place I've had chilaquiles where all the tortilla chips are coated with at least a thin layer of the salsa that they put in, so each bite is flavorful, but without the sogginess. The onions, beans, queso fresco, and the egg all blended so well together with what chilaquiles should be. The star of the meal was definitely the pork belly rice bowl. The pork belly was cooked so well with the fatty parts being extremely crispy and the meat being soft and juicy. The hoisin glaze was a fantastic addition to the meat, and went very well with the herb and butter rice, which was a mouthful of flavor with each bite. Service: Great! We were checked up on very periodically and everything came out within a reasonable amount of time. Overall: I would hands down come back here and recommend it to anyone who would come to Costa Mesa. The pork belly bowl was so good, I can't pass up on the opportunity to not have it again. With so many other items on the menu left to try, it's definitely a place I need to...
Read moreA first time visit to Toast in Costa Mesa allowed the chance to try the Ube French Toast. As one of my favorite breakfast dishes, french toast isn't something I typically order other than in basic form, but this blueberry flavored breakfast dish did not disappoint and did not even really need the maple syrup. Brioche bread provided a soft texture that could have been saturated in the batter a bit longer for my likes, but the blueberry pastry cream, blueberry/mango drizzle and fresh blueberries more than made up for it.
Perhaps most surprising, was the coconut fueilletine. A crunchy, yet light granola-like topping with coconut that had a familiar taste that was sweet in isolation, but slightly salty when paired with the french toast. After evaluation, it appears to be a housemade granola made with frosted flakes cereal, but it was delicious and provided a unique crunchiness not typically found in a french toast dish. For the Baby Boomer generation, the metal glasses will provide a trip down memory lane, but without the iconic '60's color.
Definitely worth a visit and I cannot wait to return to try one of their mini baked fruit pies that also...
Read moreI'd been following this profile on IG for a while because the posts look incredible. This is one of the very few times where the pics match the product. The food was fresh, quick and delicious 🤤. The staff were pleasant, friendly and made you feel like an old friend. It just so happened one of the owners, Michelle, stopped by our table to introduce herself, welcome us and proceed to tell us about some of menu/bakery items. You could tell she loves food and sharing that love. We had an order of chicken n' waffles and a pork belly rice bowl. As funny as it sounds, the food was nice and hot when it came out. The chicken was perfect, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Well seasoned with more than just salt & pepper. The waffle just kept the good stuff coming, toasty and fluffy at the same time. As for the pork belly, it was another hit. Full of mouth watering unctuousness. It was paired with pickled veggies, bok choy and a perfectly cooked sunnyside up egg. The pickled veggies offered the exact amount of contrast to all the richness of the pork belly. The whole experience left us planning another visit and wanting to taste everything else...
