Traveling 58 & stopped because the reviews were good, we were hungry & BBQ sounded like a good idea. The parking lot almost deterred us. Not well maintained, a little dirty, but we decided to try anyway. Walking in, my hopes were renewed. Waitress service or take out counter. It was cute. Floors were VERY slippery. I didn't have on sneakers, so I almost fell twice in my slide on sandals. Our waitress was very sweet, efficient & helpful. Service was quick. She did a great job. Our food was hot & seemed fresh. Honestly, it was just bland. My hubby had the brisket plate. His brisket was very tender, otherwise uneventful. I tried a bite, but all I could taste was the fat. I did not care for it at all. His green beans were bland & hush puppies were too heavy of an oil taste for him. He did, however, like the fresh pork rinds. I had the pulled pork snack plate. My pork was good. I wish I had not put their sauce on it. They had a vinegar medium sauce on the table, but unfortunately, it was sweet, not vinegar & not medium. I added their table hot sauce & it was just average. To be honest, I messed it up with that badly named sauce. I think the pork would have been better plain. My baked beans were good, nothing special. I liked the little hush puppies. All in all, it wasn't bad but it was very average. I wouldn't pay to eat there again except the brownie. To my disappointment, they were out of ice cream & hot fudge, so I couldn't have the desert I wanted. But our sweet waitress did give me the browine to go & it was delicious! I saved 1/2 for the next day because it was so big & rich. It was still soft & delicious the next day. I would go back for the tea & a...

Was very hopeful that their BBQ was good when I saw a smoker outside. At least we can assume they dont buy pre-made meat.
I got BBQ pork platter with potato salad and coleslaw. Wife got BBQ pulled chicken platter with collards and Mac & cheese. We also got the brisket "small plate" to share. Each of the 3 came with hushpuppies.
First and foremost, SALT AND PEPPER... a little seasoning can go a long way. Pork was bland with zero flavor (but at least it wasn't dry). Potato salad tasted like boiled potatoes and mayo. No flavor to them. Coleslaw was literally chopped cabbage and maybe some mayo also, but no flavor at all. Their house BBQ "grilling sauce" saved the BBQ pork. The pulled chicken looked like they maybe boiled some chicken thighs in liquid smoke. Wife said the collars were good (a few hours later, she quickly changed her mind! Lol). Mac and cheese = bland. Hushpuppies, nothing more than a little fried dough ball. Now after all that, the worst part of it all was the "brisket". We laughingly called it beef jersey. It was so hard and dry.
The server asked if we wanted to go boxes after eating almost none of the food, we said no thanks. He asked if we enjoyed it. We told him the service was decent and thats about it. I mentioned the hard dry brisket, he said "yeah I saw what it looked like. It looks hard". I asked why he served it then and he said I dunno.
Unfortunately google won't let me post photos because I took some so I could share what the beef jerkey, i mean brisket, looked like...
There we go. I think it let me...
Read moreNot too often I find myself dropping a five star.. here's the reasons. We come into the place only to be immediately greeted with a comforting southern smile and eccentric attitude. We are then graciously taken to our booth amongst the tiny, but not so tiny, crowd of early birds. The waitress is quick on her feet to our booth and inquires about what we would like to drink this morning. Us being the manly men we are, are fast with our black coffee responses. The eloquence she uses when walking back with our coffee makes me think she is of royalty. Carefully stepping around her co-worker and providing us with our much needed hot, caffeinated cups'o joe. She asks for the details when we provide her with our dishes of choice for the morning. "How would we like our eggs?" She makes sure to give each of us attention with her eyes as she asks and the difference was made when I realized she was actually looking us in our eyes, not looking through us or at us like we were just another table. Such a personable and bright woman that quite honestly deserves some main stage spotlight time on this review. That was just the experience being a five star. The food was impeccable. Just shy of being the best breakfast I've ever had.. and I've eaten breakfast all around the world. clears throat This is a five star restaurant. Don't let the simplicity of it's look undermine what it really is, a diamond in the rough. In a world where there is a food place on every corner, you have to stand out. With excellent service, exceptional prices, and amazing food.. Checkered Pig...
