First time back to Tan-Cha since ownership change after not going for over a year. Not sure if it’s due to inexperience or it was just a bad day but the method to making drinks must have changed somewhere as they were not quite the quality I expected from Tan-Cha.
Drinks: My group and I got a Matcha Latte with Boba, Cheezo Berry with Agar, and one of their new drinks the Hami Milkshake (Cantaloupe Blended Drink with Brûlée Cream). Matcha Latte was watery (most likely because the barista put ice directly in the warm matcha causing it be watered down before adding milk to temper). Boba was bloated and had obviously been sitting for a long time. Both Cheezo Berry and Hami Milkshake had too much ice and was not blended completely so the flavors were not balanced. Hami Milkshake tasted like it only had one piece of cantaloupe blended in and would not get again. Cheese Foam does not taste as good as I remembered.
Food: Ordered popcorn chicken and firecracker shrimp. Chicken pieces were very inconsistent and had a lot of small little bits. Taste was fine but lacking in some areas. For the firecracker Shrimp, it used to be five large shrimp wrapped with taro and egg roll wrapper. Instead I received three small egg roll looking items. I figured they were doing it without tail or something. When we bit into it it was basically just a frozen veggie egg roll? Two out of the three did not have any shrimp but the third one had small baby shrimp. If it was just the first two I would have thought it was a mistaken food item but since the third had shrimp I was very very disappointed. (They also do not have an egg roll item on the menu so I guess this is what they are advertising as firecracker shrimp)
Service/Atmosphere: decor is mainly the same but the new wall decor is confusing to me. You can see a lot of wear and tear in the store from previous owners lack of maintenance and the bathroom was not the cleanest. (Questionable yellow stains on toilet paper dispenser). Service was fine! Nothing to complain about there.
Overall, I’m not sure I will go back and I used to love Tan-Cha. Perhaps they still do their signature drinks well but if the business owners are personally making my drinks then I expect even the obscure ones to be up to standard which they were not.
