oh boy this review is long overdo, as I have been to bobs many times and consider it one of my favorite evanston gems. I typically order takeout but today we decided to dine in. the atmosphere is always fantastic at bobs, as whoever had aux needs a raise. (seriously, the music is great and is a wide range of rock usually). plus, the bar decor, and layout of the restaurant just bring a really nice feel. (there are also lots of TVs if you are looking to watch a sporting event). i started with a draft beer, which they rotate frequently (this time one of my favorite seasonal beers, Oberon). the rotational ciders are usually a great choice too. we got the fried pickles to start, which have the perfect light crunch, some dill as garnish and a side of ranch for dipping. we also got a apple spinach salad, which was decent tbh. I would recommend the brussels sprouts and arugula salad more. then we got a half wild mushroom pizza, half spinach pesto. there are so many great combos, so i love that you can split them. the sausage pizza, pepperoni and the pickle are great choices too. the pizzas are HUGE and the crust is a lot so one pizza can easily feed 3 people. (even 4 with apps and sides). oh yeah did i mention the pizza crust is made with beer??? it’s so bubbly and crunchy, one of my favorites ! side note: i would also highly recommend the smash burger and the hot crispy chicken, both fabulous. the service here has always been quick when i come and the staff is friendly. when ordering takeout, it’s quick too, and they store your food in a hot box so it stays toasty. plus they have fun nights like trivia, good happy hour and deals throughout the week. it is a great place for college students, adults and even families. after 10, they stop serving apps and sandwiches and becomes more of a bar. it’s open late too which is a bit plus. i love this place and will continue to be a frequent visitor and i...
Read moreI went to Bob’s for drinks with some friends and as we sat in the booth we were met with the waitress who we would come to learn would never check on us again. She took our first orders of drinks and appetizers, I ordered a Moscow mule and when I received it it was in a plastic cup. Over $10 for a cocktail and they can’t even serve it in the traditional copper cup. When we finished our first round of drink orders, the waitress never came back to check on us. We waited so long that we inevitably walked up to the bar ourselves to order another drink, when by that time the waitress finally comes back since she’s sees us standing up. We place our order with her and when she serves them she hands us our check even though it is an hour before closing and says “Honestly im tried of working right now so if you want to keep ordering you can do it at the bar”. Unbelievable. The whole time we were there she was sitting at the opposite side of the restaurant with her friends and a dog.
Some time later, another waitress or bartender (hadn’t seen her before) rudely comes up to us and tells us to leave because they’re closing, even though there are other people still there. So we wait about 10 more minutes, when she returns and even more rudely says “You guys know what time it is? Time to go”. While other people were still there and it wasn’t right at closing time yet. It was incredibly disrespectful service and while I usually try to extend patience to wait staff, this was unacceptable and rude. I absolutely do not...
Read more"Pilsen Style Pizza"--the creation of the Bob's head chef, Matt Wilde, is crazy good. We had been wanting to go for a few weeks since we received a mailer encouraging us to visit this relatively new addition to the Evanston food scene and were at last able to stop in yesterday night. We ordered a Pickle Pizza and a Bob's Sausage Pizza. The sausage pizza was made with quality ingredients and a fluffy, flavorful dough. This was the first time that I had ever had pickled onions on a pizza and they added an extra zest to the pie, while retaining the crunch of a fresh onion--definitely an ingredient that I would love to see on more pizzas. We chose the pickle pizza because we were curious to see how this pizza could possibly be good. We were expecting it to be salty and overwhelmingly dill flavored. But we were very pleased to be proved wrong. The toppings are a refreshing combination of mortadella, garlic cream, and dill pickles--but it seems as though that the pickles are only lightly pickled (still retaining a fresh crunch), sliced very thinly (perhaps before they are pickled) and expertly seasoned with fresh dill. The pickle pizza would have to be our favorite of the two that we tried, although both were great. The only thing that I would change would be the way my beer was served—which arrived at my table with no head; which may be because I don’t know how many people are ordering Old Style from the tap, but it was something that I was looking forward to, but became something that I was ultimately...
