Suggestions: the Belafonte (waffle with Nutella, strawberries and powdered sugar) or the Whirlybird (waffle with fresh cinnamon apples, vanilla ice-cream, caramel drizzle, and bourbon whipped cream) Price: $6-$8 per waffle Pros: The waffles are amazing, the toppings they use are always fresh, the staff is very helpful and service is always very quick Cons: The milkshakes aren't that awesome, getting to the physical location can be a little challenging given is location on a non-traffic side street, and seating is very limited.
Thoughts: I love waffles, warm and chewy deliciousness with just a little bit of a crunch on the outside. My problem is that so many places get restaurants wrong. They are either overcooked and not soft on the inside, undercooked and have the firmness of a pancake, or so overly sweet they taste like a cookie. Cousteau's gets it a close to perfect as I've every had. To prove this point one of their best options is their plain waffle with a little syrup. They do an amazing job of getting their batter to just the right level of sweetness, it doesn't taste overly sweet but it isn't so plain that it taste like bread. Then they always get the cook perfect; there is just a little bit of crunch on the outside of the waffle but the center is soft, almost to the point of gooeyness.
As if the waffles themselves weren't enough their toppings are always fresh. So much so that if a certain fruit isn't in season (as strawberries were last time we went) they simply won't have them. While It can sometimes feel disappointing that they may not have the topping you wanted, I love that they are willing to just not have a topping rather than risk poor quality. My personal favorite is the Whilybird; a perfect waffle topped with freshly prepared cinnamon apple slices, two scoops of vanilla ice cream, several dollops of bourbon flavored whipped cream and a small drizzle of caramel on top of the whole thing. It is SO FREAKIN GOOD. The perfect balance of hot and cold and guaranteed to give you a good sugar fix without being overkill.
While it is a waffle and milkshake bar, I wouldn't go for the milkshake. While you could drink one if you were there anyway I would skip it. The ice cream they use just seems to poor to really elevate it to the same status as their waffles. They also don't have a lot of seating and you will have to park at lease a few blocks away and walk to their location. This is pretty common for Saint Augustine but it isn't a place you can quickly run into and get out in a few minutes. Despite the time it may take it is absolutely worth it to go and I can't...
Read moreUPDATE:: we just went Saturday since its been awhile so of course we was so excited. Mind you we don't have breakfast before we leave the house so we drive an hour plus for this and it was chewy ((not like it normally tastes) Luckily we was the only ones there so we was able to let them know that "hey these came out a little under cooked" they told us its on a timer and that's how they come out. well that's NOT how they come out because we've been plenty of times and never have they came out like that. Well they offered to give us our money back but we didn't want that we just wanted good waffles. So my boyfriend already lost his appetite and the girl asked if i would like another so i did. I told her just plain (just to see how it comes out) well it came out the same. My only conclusion is the batter was made differently or something. I bake and my boyfriend is a cook so we know something was off. Well they never checked up on us again. They was behind the wall not even looking at us. So we left and they didn't even notice i threw that other waffle away also. I just hope they fix whatever the issue was. We wasn't mad because we know things happen just disappointed. We will be back for sure and hopefully we can ENJOY our waffle like we always have.
My go to spot when we go to St.Augustine. we LOVE it. That bourbon whipped cream is heaven lol and their shakes yummm!! We drive 1hr 20mins just to stop and get our...
Read moreI had been googling “real Belgian waffles” for a while and after seeing all the fancy stuff I had to order I put it on my growing list of things to try one day. On a weekend visit St Augustine I stumbled across this quaint dessert spot. I think there was only one or two people working and we came in at the end of a rush. We stood at the counter for about 5 minutes waiting (we were told it would take a little bit as he was preparing an order). It gave us time to look at the menu but someone who knew what they wanted may have been annoyed. Anyway I ordered the Plimpton with blueberries and honey whipped cream and my brother ordered the Whirlybird with apples, caramel, bourbon whipped cream, and ice cream. They were both delicious. Warm chewy waffles with a nice crunch, slightly doughy and amazing. Literally the most divine waffle you will ever have. Btw I have a fam full of waffle enthusiasts so we know good waffles lol. You must try these if you are in the area. The only thing keeping them from a 5 Star review was all of the disorganization visible behind the counter. It looked like there were in the process of moving and not the type of clutter you want to see when you are ordering food somewhere. Keep it out of the public eye at least. Minimal seating and...
