So prior to going I called and asked if they were wearing masks and the girl said yes. As an asthmatic, masks aren’t optional where food prep is concerned for me. When I arrived the chef had his nose exposed, I asked him politely and directly if he was uncomfortable over the grill with the mask, cuz if he was I’d gladly compromise and order a bowl, mind you the cashier is standing there w her mask on the entire time. The chef says it’s ok n proceeds to start cooking my food nose exposed, I ask again can you please cover your nose, if not I’ll just grab a bowl , the cashier asks him and he still doesn’t do it. At that point I say “I don’t understand and I’m willing to compromise but he can’t breathe on my food, I can’t risk it” he gets mad walks over to the cashier and says “so take your money back” I’m confused cuz I didn’t ask for that so I say yet AGAIN I just need you to cover your nose, if you’re uncomfortable I’ll get a bowl” he says “yes I’m uncomfortable” I say OK lemme get a bowl, this man pulls up the mask says “no it’s ok “ and makes the sandwich???? Then he goes to the back I ask the cashier was I tripping? And she shrugs n says “that’s how he always wears it” “it’s good”....now mind you this is less than a mile from the HOSPITAL where healthcare workers and patients frequent often. Thw cashier went on to say “he doesn’t speak English well” so y then wouldn’t she explain better to her coworker my request instead of letting the exchange escalate? Whoever management is needs better oversite, I’ll be calling the board of...
Read moreSteak Escape – A True Bodega-Style Cheesesteak Win
On this outing, we were very pleasantly surprised. The place? Steak Escape—and let me tell you, it blew me away.
We were just craving a cheesesteak, popped it into Google, and lucked out. Google pointed us here, but more importantly, Steak Escape absolutely outdid themselves.
We ordered the cheesesteak (of course), and while I wasn’t born and raised in Philly, I lived in Philadelphia for 19 years. On top of that, I owned a bodega—aka a poppy store—where I made plenty of cheesesteaks myself. So when I say I know a good cheesesteak, I mean it.
This isn’t a high-end spot like Angelo’s or Stella's for those of you familiar with Philly—but that’s not a knock. This tasted like the real deal: a corner-store, bodega classic. The kind of cheesesteak you’d get wrapped in foil with the juices soaking into the paper, made with love and serious flavor.
The bread was on point, the meat was seasoned well, and everything came together just right. I’ve been to a number of local spots—if you’ve been following my reviews, you already know—but this one tops the list for me so far.
Service was excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only downside is the atmosphere—it’s a little dingy—but honestly, that just adds to the authenticity. I’m hoping more people discover this place and help it thrive. It deserves it.
Five out of five stars. This is my new go-to. We’ll definitely, definitely be...
Read moreThe cook/manager was rude and argumentative. I ordered a Cajun chicken bowl and I built a bowl with steak onions green peppers and tomatoes. I asked for sriracha and balsamic vinaigrette sauce on the side. I was given a steak bowl with onions peppers mushrooms and carrots with balsamic vinaigrette on it. I told the manager I wanted my sauces on the side he told me we don't do that. Well why didn't the cashier tell me that instead of putting whatever sauce they chose on my bowl? He never offered to make another So I opened it and tasted it before leaving. It was disgusting. I asked for my money back after the refund he threw my card on the counter and walked off. The chicken bowl was just ok but I wouldn't eat it again. I won't be back
I absolutely did mention on the side. And not to mention you still out mushrooms and carrots when I wanted onions green peppers and tomatoes. And as I said argumentative and now obviously a liar because I said more than once...
