Good beer and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit! (5/5 green stars) First stop after arriving at LIH airport – Kauai Beer Co. :-) Ok, to be honest, I first stopped at Ha Coffee Bar a little down the street. It was only noon, for goodness sakes! Jillian and the other bar staff members were really friendly and helpful. Here’s my low-down on the beer I tried: Lihue lager is a good beer for a hot day. I'm not a big lager fan but it was more interesting than most lagers I’ve had. Black limousine seemed to represent the style well, if you like Schwarzbier. The OG is a fruity wheat beer (contains orange zest and guava) that I would have again in a Kauai minute! The Tropical Armadillo oatmeal pale ale was fantastic - better than Sierra Nevada's Tropical IPA. They were out of nitro and the smoked blonde ale – two that would have been first on my list to try but even still I would return for the OG and Tropical Armadillo. And I want to try those taro fries too ;)
I’m also giving them 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • Beer is brewed on site, reducing the carbon and material footprints (transportation and packaging). • They’ll fill growlers to-go, again reducing packaging. • They use some local fruit (e.g., their lilikoi kombucha) and honey from the Big Island for their brews. • Grain has to come from the mainland, of course, but it’s mostly from Washington State, where farming practices tend to be on the sustainable side. • Close to public transport (the Kauai Bus, of course! – it’s actually a very good service). • A lot of community involvement, including an upcoming Habitat for Humanity event in Oct. • They list a whole bunch of local farms that they source their food from – several items, such as their bread and taro fries,...
Read moreThis is my first time ever leaving a review, because while eating my charred smash burger, with nothing more than a speck of sauce on it, that took nearly an hour to come out, I really felt it was my duty to leave an honest review. I’ve had beer here before, and the beer is decent. Other than that, this place is trash. All ordering is done through an app. First thing I hated about this place. If I go to a brewery, I want to talk to people! I want to place an order with a human! Why on earth would a brewery encourage everyone to be on their phones rather than socializing with each other and with the server? This alone would have been enough for me to never come back. But the menu looked good, so I stuck around (I’m a sucker for a smash burger) so I ordered one (through my phone). It took nearly an hour to come out. One smash burger! And the place wasn’t even packed. Then the burger finally comes out. The buns were BLACK. Completely burnt. And there was a speck sauce the size of a pea on it. Needless to say the burger was nearly inedible, but as I had already been there an hour and had to get going, i wolfed down as much as i could handle (probably giving myself cancer from the carcinogens on the burnt bun) and asked for the tab. On top of this god awful burger that I had to order through my phone and wait an hour for, they still had the audacity to expect a 20% tip. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a worst experience at a brewery. Im not leaving this review because I’m an a-hole. I’m leaving this as a warning to customers, and more importantly, as an invitation to Kauai Island Brewery to step your game up. Ditch the app. People want to socialize. And if you burn the buns on a burger, please, for the love of a dang burger, toast some new buns. It...
Read moreWe did not have a great experience.
After waiting for a seat, my family was sat at the street view bar seat making it difficult to hear each other and share. Stools were awkward and not quite the right height, forcing us to look at all of the other folks waiting for a table.
Using the QR code menu application made the ordering process much longer than it had to be while also making the experience impersonal. The extra step to obtain email addresses and credit card information prior to the order also added to the wait. This was a frustrating ordering experience.
Food was okay at best. My jalapeno-popper-pickle-&-stuff burger was meh on the burger, had good pickles, but everything else contributed to just a mushy, mostly flavorless combination.
Wife and kid liked the food but its nothing to write home about. Wait staff was pleasant and prompt once the order was in, but the little "stick-the-green-card-in-the-holder" to get our attention method did not work.
The place has good bones (they love dogs) but fell flat as an experience for my family. Average brewpub options with an average brewpub execution. Bar was stuffy, loud, and uncomfortable. Staff were not rude, but not helpful either. Really lacks the customer component in customer service.
For the next family you stick at the window bar, please ask them if that seating is okay. We don't mind waiting if the outcome...
