My husband and I each ordered a plate of food. To begin with, my husband asked the woman at the counter about the Malta India drink since he's never had it. She responded immediately by saying he probably wouldn't like it without saying anything about how it tastes. I didn't think too much about this because I've had Malta and it has a strong taste so personally I didn't think it would be a good choice for my husband anyway, although she should have explained the taste to him and not made an assumption about what he would like (she doesn't know him at all, after all). After ordering we paid and left a 25% tip (since we were paying with a card and it's COVID-19 right now we left the tip right away, not anticipating any problems).
We went to sit outside and wait for our food. Another woman brought it out in sealed take out containers. We proceeded to eat. Within a minute my husband finds this small ball of greasy hair with some blue fiber debris in it. In short-it was disgusting and obviously was in the food before we opened it up (ie not a leaf or something from outside). My husband went inside with his food to point this out to the employees.
Well, the woman at the counter first insisted that it must have just fallen in and it wasn't from the kitchen. When he fished it out and it was obviously something that had gotten in while being plated or cooked she got irritated with him. She asked what he wanted her to do about it and he said "Well what do you normally do in a situation like this?" The woman responded "I don't know, do you want us to remake your food?" By this point my husband was upset and worried that if the food was remade they might spit in it or do something else so he wasn't comfortable asking them to remake it. He apologized and went to leave. The two employees tried to insist on making him a new plate but by this point, he wasn't comfortable accepting one.
In short, they should have offered to remake the food (which he would have been perfectly happy with) or refund our money right away and not accused my husband of putting a greasy ball of hair in his own food. I have worked in restaurants before, I know this kind of stuff sometimes happens, but when it does, it needs to be dealt with promptly and respectfully.
We did eat my plate of food and it was delicious so it's really too bad it happened this way. I would suggest that the manager/owner have more of a presence at this store as this interaction really turned us off of 90 Mile since it was handled so...
Read moreDining at 90 Miles on Armitage Ave was like taking a quick vacation without leaving Chicago. The moment you step in, the inviting aroma of Cuban spices greets you, and Buena Vista Social Club’s melodies in the background make you feel like you’ve just landed somewhere far warmer and full of life.
Let’s talk about the food. I started with the ham croquetas and yuca con mojo, which were an adventure all on their own. The croquetas were crispy on the outside, creamy and perfectly seasoned on the inside—so fresh they could’ve been plucked straight from Havana. The yuca con mojo, draped in garlic and citrus, had this incredible zing that made it a perfect sidekick to the main dishes.
As for the stars of the meal: the Churrasco was as tender as a heartfelt love song. Each bite melted in my mouth, practically singing its own little “Guantanamera.” The Ropa Vieja was everything you could wish for—tender, flavorful, and cooked with a depth of spices that made every forkful a celebration. And the Rabo Encendido? Let’s just say, if you haven’t had oxtail this juicy and rich, you’re missing out on one of life’s great joys.
The atmosphere was only made better by the incredibly kind and attentive staff. They made sure everything was just right, with warm smiles that made you feel right at home. And here’s the kicker—a BYOB policy with no corking fee! You can bring along your favorite wine or beer, sit back, and enjoy a little extra Cuban flair without any extra charge.
If you’re looking for an authentic, vibrant dining experience that’s as much about the people and the vibe as it is about the food, 90 Miles is the place to be. Just don’t be surprised if you leave with a little extra pep in your step—or a sudden urge to...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at 90 Miles Cuban Cafe, and I must say that I was absolutely blown away by their delicious vegan empanadas and Mariquitas. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of this vibrant Cuban restaurant.
As a vegan, I am always on the lookout for tasty plant-based options, and 90 Miles did not disappoint. Their vegan empanadas were absolutely incredible - crispy on the outside, with a flavorful and savory filling that was bursting with a variety of spices and fresh herbs. I was particularly impressed by how well the filling was balanced - not too heavy, and not too light - making each bite a perfect balance of textures and flavors.
The Mariquitas were equally as delicious - crispy and crunchy, with just the right amount of saltiness. They were the perfect accompaniment to the empanadas.
What really stood out to me, however, was the exceptional service. The staff were incredibly attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, offering helpful recommendations and answering any questions that we had. It was clear that they take great pride in their food and genuinely care about their customers' dining experience.
All in all, I would highly recommend 90 Miles Cuban Cafe to anyone looking for a flavorful and memorable dining experience. Whether you're vegan or not, you're sure to be impressed by their delicious empanadas and Mariquitas, as well as their warm and...
