This is one of, if not the best,BBQs in LA. The Chicken Dinner is pretty damn good. If you want more food, go with that. If you just want a smaller portion, get the chicken sandwich (chicken and 2 pieces of bread to make your own sandwich).
The sliced beef is excellent and I'm not a big beef eater. The sandwich is several slices of beef perfectly sauced up and 2 pieces of bread. Perfect lunch size.
Desserts: The Peach Cobbler is fresh and my favorite. Second is the Sweet Potato Pie. Nice flavoring. Third is the Red Velvet -- Hear me out: It is just a little too sweet for me now. Great taste, huge piece, just a bit sweet for my taste.
I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about. First, it hasn't been Leo's since 2004 -- 12 years is enough time to get over that. Second, it seems to me that so-called gentrification and hipsters have made it "acceptable" to come into the community and belittle the offerings and tell us that Phillips isn't up to their liking. Get out of here with that. Finally, please stop talking about the community in such a pejorative manner. Some reviews make it sound like a war zone at Phillips. Just like with any area that isn't familiar to you, don't do anything stupid and/or careless and you likely won't...
Read moreI was craving BBQ I usually cook my own but I don't have a BBQ pit right now since I moved in a new apartment building. I didn't want to make oven Bbq I wanted real BBQ. I live around the corner from this spot. I had the sliced beef dinner with potato salad and BBQ baked beans. I also ordered a BBQ chicken sandwich and a pint of mac and cheese. My older daughter had the beef ribs with the same sides as me we shared the mac. When we got home I discovered that they made a mistake I'm guessing because my chicken sandwich was 2 pieces of chicken and BBQ bean with 2 slices of bread. I was planning on eating it later but I ended up giving the chicken pieces to my youngest daughter who wanted Jack in the box instead of BBQ. The sliced beef was delicious and tender it was very good so was everything else. My only complaint was the potato salad it was just whatever. The macaroni and cheese was delicious me my 2 daughters and granddaughter ate the whole pint of mac. It was seasoned well and cheesy very good baked mac.and I love mac and cheese so trust me it's good! I will definitely be coming back again! Next time I'll order ahead we stood in line about 25 minutes and waited the same amount of time to get the food it was packed but it...
Read moreBest beef ribs in town.
Simple, basic BBQ sauces. I won't get into arguments over what or whose sauces are best, that's a matter of personal preference.
The ribs are meaty and fall-off-the-bone tender, and whoever is buying the beef is hand-picking the meat for quality, which is more than I can say for most places.
Friendly customer service. A tad on the pricy side, but you're definitely getting your moneys' worth.
But expect a wait. there is ALWAYS a line. On a good day or at a good time, it's no worse than the supermarket, maybe 5-10 minutes to place your order, and a decent wait while your food is prepared.
Sometimes, no place to park and a line out the door. I've heard of 2 hour waits on holidays and weekends, sometimes I just have to take a pass and try some other day.
And the fact some customers will wait 2 hours speaks well of Phillips and their BBQ.
(edit): It's sad that I needed to add this. One of the reviews claims they treat white customers with disdain, and as a white person, I would have to say the crew and customers have always been friendly. My impression is that the problem was the customer, not the...
