I had the good fortune last weekend of stopping by Mama's Pizzeria for lunch. Mama's has apparently been here a long time. My brother said when he worked in the area 10 years ago they would come here regularly for lunch and that the staff is still all the same folks.

Mama's PIzzeria is built into a house that's been repurposed into a restaurant. There's a newer addition on the front that acts as the kitchen and a smaller single serving dining area while the house's first floor serves as the main dining room. The place is cozy and well kept.

We had a group of five, 3 adults, 2 children and all piled in around the round table in the back of the dining area. Our server was super nice and took all of our orders and set about fetching our drinks, which were 20oz Coke's and a 7-UP. We added a large bag of chips which was spread out between all of our plates. From there we waited about 10 minutes for or food. My brother and I went with full cheesesteaks with grilled onion, his son had the same minus the onion. His wife had half a cheesesteak and his daughter had half of a meatball sub.

So how was the food you ask? DYNOMITE! to quote an old 70's TV show. First of all the sandwich was frik'n huge. My photo doesn't do it justice. Also the close up photo I posted only shows one half of the sandwich. The taste of the sandwich was excellent and the grilled onions they used there really stood out. A very very enjoyable cheesesteak indeed. Also I skipped dinner last night. That meal was super close to a food coma and totally enough food for the rest of the day.

I only make it up to this area about once a year, and by god next year, or hopefully sooner, I'll be making another visit to Mama's Pizzeria. No...

Been to Mama's in the past (and liked it) just thought I would try it again. Sorry I did it was not that good price and food. Have had many cheese steaks being from Philly. For those not from Philly to tell a good steak try the meat with nothing its the base of the sandwich. The steak had no flavor it was bland. If you ask people from Philly they have two opinions on cheese steaks. The first being there neighborhood spot and then the ones that get the hype from visitors. My neighborhood spots worth trying are Overbrook Pizza and Larry's Steats with Overbrook being better (west phila City av area) If you are in NE phila. try Steve's on Buselton Av flat steak not chopped, Center City or Down Town try Carmine's in Reading Terminal. Try Joe's lower NE on Torresdales av and on Geriad Av. In Roxboro neighborhood try Barry's Steaks. In south Phila try Cosmi Deli or Ishkabibbles on South Street and John's on Synder av. Notice the ones that are not mention. I only gave Mama's two stars base on reputation today's visit one ๐ŸŒŸ. And ask a Philly, South Jersey or North Delaware friend where to get a good cheesesteak they can tell you if the are truly from the area. If you run into a Jersey Mike's in you travel you will not be disappointed. I have had there cheesesteak at three different location in two states and liked them all the time get it Jersey Mike's way with...

I spent the night at the Hilton City Ave after a recent concert at the Mann Center and wanted a good Philly cheesesteak before traveling on to New Jersey. I was encouraged to see high ratings for nearby Mama's (est. 1958) and decided to hoof the 1+ mile through the beautiful Bala Cynwyd neighborhood.

I ordered the basic cheesesteak (original size) and added Italian "long hots" (recommended by the cashier) but totally spaced on adding mushrooms and/or onions, and I'm glad I did.

The combination of the Italian peppers and Mama's cheese blend (a mix of mozzarella and provolone and maybe something else, I'm guessing) created an almost jalapeno popper like flavor which is still making my mouth water as I type this review three days later. The sandwich was HUGE, but I demolished every morsel, chased it with a bottle of water, and hoofed it back to the Hilton for a late check-out.

I'll be very hard-pressed not to want another Mama's cheesesteak next time I'm in Philly or even just passing through, though next time I might mix it up, and I would be happy to entertain suggestions from any regulars who might happen upon this review.

PS: Mama's Pizzeria no longer serves pizza, but their cheesesteaks are truly 10/10, and they now have a smaller size for those who can't stomach the original. They also say "takeout only" online, but there are a few tables inside,...

I kept hearing about this place that has the best cheesestake hoagie, meatballs and more. Well , finally decided to check out the food and what a disappointment it was. From all the good talk, figured this place had great tasty food but it tastes more like cardboard, very dry , no seasoning and the worse was the can mushrooms. What a waste of my money! The only thing that was nice was the bread but that was it. I wonโ€™t be recommending this place at all and will be talking to the people that recommended this place to tell them to go find their taste buds! Update:since I hadn't eaten all the dry meatballs, I got some sauce, sweet peppers, mushsrooms, onions and added my spices salt, black pepper, oregano, and made some spaguetti sauce for pasta. It was the only way that I could finish eating dry tasteless meatballs.

I haven't eaten at Mama's since 1996, 28 years ago when I was doing my residency at Temple. This was always my go to Philly cheesesteak place. I live in California, but I've been craving it for 28 years. I finally made it back, and wanted to show my wife all my old haunts and stomping grounds. Mama's was at the top of my list. We split an original cheesesteak with mushrooms, and let me tell you, it was even better than I remembered. The sandwich was the size of my forearm, and stuffed to the gills with delicious, tender and gooey cheesey goodness. I used to polish an entire original to myself, but nowadays, half is plenty for me. Thank God Mama's is still around after all these years, and I hope it will still be here the next time I set foot in Philly, whenever that may be
