Went there with my family. Was super excited to find such highly rated Korean BBQ spot here in the Yuba-Sutter area. The photos of the Korean food looked amazing, and though the price was a bit high but I was more than willing to pay to support a local business.
We ordered various kinds of fish and chips for the kids, and the batter was good - not too thick, and they were fried well. The oil tasted fresh, and the kids all enjoyed their food. I would highly recommend coming here for the fish and chips.
But I came mainly for the Korean food…
And I must say I was quite disappointed - at least in the Korean food we ordered.
We ordered the Korean BBQ and the spicy pork. I was very excited to get the side dishes pictured in the menu. That was the first major disappointment.
None of the sides were hot. There was a fried zucchini dish that was covered in sweet / sour sauce of sorts - but cold?? The pickled cabbage was ok, so was the bean sprouts (nothing to write home about,) and the seaweed was a bit fishy even for my Asian palette - and a definite no-no for my Italian/German American wife.
But no egg omelette shown in photos, and no Kimchi?? This is the first time I was not served kimchi at a Korean restaurant! Very unpleasantly surprised…
On to the main dishes. The beef was tough in the bulgogi, and it wasn’t very tasty, almost had no flavor. The “spicy” pork was not spicy AT ALL! And it was a bit game-y tasting. We couldn’t finish them at the restaurant as they were because they were so sub par. I had to come home and add gojujang paste, green onions, and cook it with water to finally infuse some taste into it.
So will I return? Sure, for the fish and chips - and maybe to brave some other Korean offerings (ramen? Bibimbap?) and hope for the best, but at $17 a dish, the spicy pork and the Korean BBQ is...
Read moreThis is a greasy spoon at its finest—unpretentious and no-frills, focusing more on the food. The sampler platter is a huge basket brimming with fried treasures: flaky fish, tender scallops, prawns, and calamari. I opted for coleslaw instead of fries, for a sweet and refreshing counterbalance.
As I dug in, a train rumbled by, over the parking lot, barely making a sound but leaving a trail of vibrant graffiti in its wake—a fleeting art show while I sipped a cold drink and enjoyed the delicious food. It was the kind of moment that made the meal feel even more authentic, more rooted in the fabric of the neighborhood. I can imagine having a nice afternoon, eating here then catching a baseball game across the street or strolling around Ellis Lake, admiring the ducks.
The food was everything it needed to be—hot, fresh, and with that perfect crunch that speaks of a cook frying with love and experience. The coleslaw was some of the best I've ever had! Not dry and perfectly sweet.
The bathrooms were spotless and well-kept, a testament to the pride that this family-run joint takes in every aspect of their operation. I’ll definitely be back, and next time, I’ve got my eyes set on the fried zucchini and hushpuppies. Ocean Fish & Chips is the kind of place that feels like a secret, one you almost don’t want to share but it's too...
Read moreCame with my girlfriend here yesterday. One of the most "cut corners" restaurants I've ever been to. I had ordered the ramen and the moment it was set in front of my I was disappointed. After the first bite I could tell it was nothing more than a 99¢ ramen pack you can get from any market. Only with the price marked up to 7.99 and an egg cracked in it. My girlfriend confirmed that it was instant noodles, saying that she watched them throw away the package. My girlfriend ordered the seafood noodles. Which was decent. It came with a side of rice and some kimchi. I watched as the brought out other food, such as the chowder bowl. And I can only imagine that it, like the ramen, was from a package or can. They primarily serve fish a chip. Which isn't a very fresh meal to begin with. But the lack of transparency with the menu is a terrible business practice. It doesn't seem like any of the staff cares about the "quality" of their dishes. If I could rate this place any...
