All together the meal was fine. Nothing stood out as exceptional, the tart being the closest. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean. Worth eating at if you are already in the area, but not worth a trip from afar. Environment: Seating is broken up between Several rooms It is loud, but not obnoxiously so. Bathrooms are simple, clean, and nice. We were Immediately sat, but waited 20 minutes before someone came to get our drink order. We were given zero explanations or context for any other the dishes or their ingredients. That was the first sign that this was not actually fine dining. Second was that there was some Vacuuming going on during service. It seemed like odd timing as we got seated over an hour after first seating. Meal: There was No screen or strainer in the herbal tea, my wife had to pick out the loose leaves from her cup. The Mushy pea toast- bread was toasted perfectly, good smokiness of the bacon. Avocado shrimp salad Creamy and flavorful. None of the herbs were over powering which was nice, because I don’t particularly like dill. Duck confit- crispy skin, the carrots were very fresh and sweet, the saffron rice was good as well. Very simple dish, nothing outstanding about it, but well put together. Vinaigrette salad with the same bitter greens from the shrimp salad. I didn’t eat this, as I had enough from the prior salad. Chocolate tart- sweet and a touch bitter. Very good. Crunchy crumbly tart with creamy liquid chocolate and whipped cream. Worth eating at if you are already in the area, but not worth a trip from afar.

Gave this a first try as we were looking for a place to do a private party. Nothing special technique wise... just a simple roast lamb dinner that was executed ok. The asparagus was easily the best dish and was excited for more dishes but unfortunately that was the highlight. The pea soup was...pea soup. The lamb was decent, little to no jus and under seasoned and was accompanied with 1/3 cup of not great mashed potatoes. The 'lovely leaves salad' was 5 leaves of barely dressed lettuce...I get the ingredients should speak for themselves but at $100 a plate it was not very impressive... like the previous 2 dishes. The dessert was very pretty. I am not a big fan of unsweetened 'whipped cream' so it was not really my thing. Of note we did have a child with us and the menu given was one plate of about 3 ounces of buttered pasta. Super awkward moment when they served the adults dessert and nothing for the child...like really awkward... I was quite embarrassed for the restaurant. Unfortunately a one and done.

Friends invited me to join them for Sunday Brunch, called Sunday Dinner at Canal House, and I'm glad they did. It was a very good meal and the service was excellent. Seating options indoors, outdoors on patio, or a limited number of tables on an outside balcony, which is where we ate. In the photos you'll see the Sunday Dinner menu and each of the courses with exception of the Chevre Croustades, which I forgot to photograph as I was too busy eating them! The menu is fixed price and while I'm told there are sometimes options for the main, today's menu and courses were as shown. All the courses were very good, the salmon was perfectly prepared, and the service was spot on. When dishes were brought to the table, two or three wait staff assured everyone was served at exactly the same time. The team approach to servicing the table is something I always appreciate.

My wife and I were excited to try the Canal House Station restaurant for lunch today after reading a promising review and looking at the menu. The interior is very attractive and historical, with beautiful wainscotting and old pumpkin pine flooring. The chairs are a better choice for seating than the banquettes with pillows. The lunch menu has fewer than ten items, but there is a suitable range of choices with interesting ingredients and preparations. Our first suspicion of trouble in the kitchen was our forty-minute wait without any explanation or refills on water or coffee. One entrée arrived first, a blini with soft scrambled eggs, caviar and smoked salmon that was well-prepared and presented. The second entree, a fried chicken sandwich sliced in half, arrived with an obviously uncooked interior. The chicken was not pink, it was raw throughout the middle and dangerously inedible. Since there was no server available, we had to go to the kitchen and inform a cook ourselves. We were offered another choice, but after being served raw chicken, we declined. This is an inexcusable error that shows poor chef skills and irresponsible kitchen management. I will not go to a restaurant that puts our health at risk. We were offered a free meal and apology by the server, though it was not her fault. This is exactly the kind of mistake that requires an apology by management. We tipped the server the equivalent of the meal we ate and will never go to the Canal House...

Do not come to this restaurant for a special occasion, or if you expect competent and effective front of house. We've been here a few times for special occasions, and after getting totally screwed out of a special 20th wedding anniversary reservation we reserved, will never go back.

I called Friday night and made a reservation for a Sunday dinner at 5pm. The person asked if it was a special occasion, I said yes and explained. She took my number so they could call and confirm. After not receiving a call, Sunday afternoon I called and left a message. We arrived on time and were told they did not have a reservation for us in the system.

The hostess said they were full and could not accommodate us. I asked her to find the person I spoke to, and that she would be able to confirm it. She went and checked the system and said our reservation did not exist, sorry. I stood there embarrassed with a bottle of expensive wine I brought specifically for our occasion, unsure what to do next.

With such an incompetent, ineffective person who seemed unable and unwilling to make it right, I left and went to a local restaurant that was able to immediate accommodate us, where the service is great, and the food is consistently better.

We are former returning customers who were trying to build loyalty, who will never be coming back to Canal House Station again. This is no way to treat...
