This restaurant was the MOST pleasant surprise I have had since my move to Minnesota. My parents and younger brother are visiting me in Minnesota this week and today was the last day they were staying, when we went to go out for dinner we decided to try out a place that my boss from work had recommended and it was the most perfect ending piece for my family's road trip journey here to Minnesota. THE CULTURAL IMPACT: Ann Kim is the daughter of a Korean immigrant and has achieved a James Beard award. I am the son of a Korean immigrant as well which made this restaurant feel so special to me. Right away as we walked inside and saw the dishes laid out in front of us my mother pointed out that they were dishes that her mother had when they had moved into the Americas before I was even born. Already you could tell the similarity in lifestyles that Ann Kim and my mother might have had growing up. For immigrants like my parents this had a lasting warming impression on them and was everything for a perfect finish to their visit here in Minnesota. I was so happy to have the experience I had here because of this. Thank You. THE PIZZA: The pizza was fantastic, we had gotten the tavern pie and the umami mami. The tavern pie was a unique pizza dish that is masked with a plain common looking appearance. At first you might think it's just a pepperoni pizza with some jalapenos, but what did it for me was that there was honey drizzled along the top of it. You may have heard of honey on pizza but the kicker is the jalapeno. Spicy and sweet are clashing flavors, so this eccentric flavor combination actually distinguishes the two flavors extremely well in your mouth and gives you an intense impact from both sides. If this is your first time going here, I would give this a go. The Umami Mami was also a fantastic dish, if you don't really know what umami tastes like then this will let you understand. The first bite is always the most impressionable, when I bit into it I was just expecting a regular mushroomy like flavor but boy was I wrong. Its savoriness was competitive and strong in a pleasant way. Its hard to explain but something you just have to try for yourself. THE DESSERT: The softserve ice cream with sea salt and olive oil is something you see on the menu and think "how odd, lets try it." And sure enough it is going to be a high risk that feels like you got the high reward. Whenever I use olive oil to cook, put on my salad, or dip my bread in I can taste it but its flavor is very little to mild and you can't really tell what the flavor is. But when you try it with vanilla ice cream the flavor of the olive oil is brought out like no other. A metaphor I would put with it is like salt, you can pick up a grain of salt and it is physically small, but the taste is an explosion. The sweetness of the icecream brings out the taste of the olive oil like you have never tasted it before. It really felt like I was tasting olive oil for the first time. You can't go wrong. Get it. THEY CARE: The impression I had with my server was that of the best. Not only were they informative on the history and story of the restaurant, they were kind and caring. They would let us know if something might take a little bit of time to come out but went all the way to make sure that we had gotten what we needed in a certain amount of time. Not only that there is a menu item called "photo booth" that you could get and it lets you take a photo in the photo booth in the back then hang it up on the wall. THE BATHROOM: I know that this might sound odd but to accentuate my comment above about how they care, THEY REALLY DO. That light in my gallery there shows a beautiful large light bulb, and that was in the bathroom along with an amazing brass piping design that wrapped around the bathroom. The iridescent lighting shows that of a soft and gentle appearance that can do wonders for a wonderful photo. I recommend this place 100%

I don't think it is outrageous to say that this place might have the best pizzas in the Twin Cities at all! Young Joni prides itself on serving Korean and Italian fusion, so there are lots of innovative dishes that I have never heard of before, including an appetizer called kimchi hummus, which I did not end up trying. But I will say for sure that after trying many of the vegetable sides and many of their varieties of pizzas, I can recommend Young Joni's pizzas to literally everyone around me. Starting with the vegetables, the confit mushrooms, the cauliflower, and the Korean sweet potatoes all have their respective strengths, and serve as amazing side dishes. But of course, the star of the show is the pizza. One can always go with the two Italian classics, the Marinara or the Margherita, and both can provide very classic flavors that exemplify what real Italian pizzas should taste like. The garlic pieces on the Marinara and the fresh mozzarella along with fresh basil on the Margherita are just outstanding in providing the extra amount of flavor that is needed to elevate the pizza. The potato and leek pizza is no longer on Young Joni's menu, but last time when I had it, it was a very solid choice for those who are vegetarian. Then there is the Korean BBQ pizza, which you know exemplifies the restaurant's fusion mission, so it is very delicious. The combination of beef short ribs, mozzarella cheese, and soy-chili vinaigrette along with green onion and arugula on the top together make it an enjoyable experience, and it shows me that this fusion really works. The Umami Mama pizza screams "umami" all day long because it contains three different kinds of mushrooms and then ingredients that contain strong flavors which also help with elevating the umami taste, like parmigiano-reggiano, the very salty and flavorful parmesan cheese. The Amalfi Coast pizza tastes like an alternative version of the Margherita pizza, except for with more vegetables. It tastes very good because there is a lot of olive oil on the pizza which actually enhances the pizza's original flavor. On the other hand, the La Parisienne pizza does not really have a lot of (if any) olive oil, but it is an amazing pizza because the saltiness of the prosciutto and the sweetness of the caramelized onion work very well together in balancing flavors when there is ricotta cheese in the mix. So far every pizza has been a hit, which is why I love it! Dessert-wise, Young Joni doesn't have a lot, so only the church basement cookie & bar plate and the seasonal crips. I have had the former twice and enjoyed it each time, although I will say $12 is a bit much for the dessert itself. I think $8-$9 might sufficient. However, I must stress that lacking dessert while serving championship level food is completely okay, because a lot of restaurants are the opposite: having amazing desserts but relatively less tasty food. I would recommend anyone visiting Minneapolis give Young Joni a shot! Get yourself a good table, some nice food, and use their photo booth to take photos with your companions!

Young Joni, Minneapolis, as I strolled into this dining establishment, I was immediately struck by its inviting atmosphere. The space was open, and the lighting was executed with finesse, creating an ambiance that beckoned diners to relax and enjoy their evening. At the heart of Young Joni's culinary narrative lies its wood oven pizzas, which take center stage on the menu. The dedication to this craft is evident, with each pizza bearing the mark of a true artisan. However, our dining experience took a minor hit when we delved into the appetizers. The street corn, though delectable, came in an unexpectedly modest portion of three pieces for our table of four. It was a disappointment that this was not disclosed when we ordered, nor was the option to augment the serving for an additional charge extended. Yet, the culinary voyage was soon reinvigorated by the Korean BBQ pizza, a symphony of flavors that left an indelible mark. In contrast, the Parisian pizza, though undoubtedly skillfully executed, did not resonate with my personal taste. What puzzled me during our visit was the demeanor of our server. She appeared somewhat aloof and, at times, almost disinterested in bringing us our food and drinks. I cannot help but wonder if this was simply a subpar performance on an otherwise commendable team's part. The denouement of our meal arrived in the form of the ice cream with olive oil and sea salt – an exquisite choice to conclude the evening on a high note. One notable aspect that diners should be aware of is the included service charge at Young Joni. When the check arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find a thoughtful note accompanying it, which clarified the presence of the service charge and reassuringly conveyed that there was no necessity to leave an additional tip. This practice is a welcome deviation from the norm and merits commendation for its transparency and the consideration it affords to both patrons and the service staff. All in all, our visit to Young Joni was a good experience, and the clandestine photo booth in the rear added an element of intrigue to our evening. It was a night to remember, savored alongside friends, though not entirely without its hiccups.

Young Joni - Dined in on (7/9/23) It’s not even been two weeks and I’m already joni-zing for another evening at Young Joni (& with the fam). It’s like they say though, “Joni live once”. We were lucky to get a Saturday reservation only 24 hrs in advance. No doubt there was a cancellation, because this place can sometimes be booked out for over a month. Once seated, I kicked things off with their mezcal Negroni. A taste I have FULLY acquired. I especially enjoyed this ones smooth chocolatey finish from the cacao. It was the perfect balance of smoky and sweet. 🫠 I needed to try the Kimchi Hummus, so I did. Madda isn’t a fan of kimchi, but even a child could fully appreciate their fresh baked pita bread from the hearth. 10/10. Delicioso. (Madda: “I like what I like, I don’t like that stinky Kimchi”.) As soon as I saw they had a pickle pizza, I knew that would be the one I ordered. (Thinking back now 2 weeks later, I would definitely add bacon to this pizza the next time). 🐖 This time around I was smart enough to trade my 2 of my pickle slices for other peoples slices with meat. After I tried them all, I’m still glad I went with the “Perfect Pickle Pie”. I’m kind of a big Dill… guy… so, that flavor just does me right. Just call me Leonardill Dillcaprio. Frankly it was Dillicious. I must say, I loved Joni’s addition of potato chips on their rendition of the pickle za. That crunch is what most pickle pizza’s have been missing at other establishments. The real winner here was their house made ranch. We ordered 3 decent sized sides for the table, but we could have used a trough of it. You could have just given me crust and a bowl of that ranch and I would have been a happy “man-child” (as my wife would say). 🥒 🍕 👍🏻⚡️ Madda ordered the “Old Reliable”, with the house red sauce and mozzarella. Just like Kevin McCallister from “Home Alone”, this woman loves her a plain chee-pizza. She didn’t even give me a bite of the main area of the pizza, but I did get her crust! 🍦Billy said the soft serve w/ Olive Oil “tasted like Play-Doh”, which - TBH, might have been a selling point for me, big Play-Doh eater here back in the day. It’s worth the try. #pizza #minneapolis

TL;DR Service made us feel like we were a bother. Our whole party wasn’t welcome even though the place was barely half full. Good food, weird vibes - staff seemed inexperienced. My daughter and her boyfriend wanted to celebrate their 21st birthday together and we had some friends who weren’t sure if they would come and celebrate with us at the speakeasy. We had never been here before so we were very excited to join. We were greeted by a host who was very friendly and sat us promptly. Then when we sat down we were not attended to for about ten minutes even though the place was half empty. We were ready with our food and drink orders by the time our server came to our table and wanted to order quickly because we had plans later in the night, however we were confused when the server told us we were not allowed to order food yet and could only order drinks to start. Later a few more guests in our party arrived, food and drinks came out and were great, and finally, because we were held up by ordering and our plans had to change, a few more people than expected joined us just for quick drinks as we were about to leave. Our server came and asked us if everyone was in our party and we said yes because everyone who was planning on coming was there. He explained to us that there could only be six people to a table even though, the place was half empty. Later when one more person joined who we didn’t know in advance was coming, our server sent the manager over to us to again ask us if everyone was in our party and again explained to us the six person rule. At that point some members of our party were getting ready to leave anyway and the last person who joined did not feel comfortable at all and also ended up leaving without ordering. We confronted the manager with how uncomfortable we felt and that our celebration felt rushed and out of place. The manager apologized and again explained the six person rule to us but offered no resolution for our guests and myself who felt uncomfortable. Not sure if I’d recommend the Back Bar for a group of friends.
