We stopped by Origami after a long walk from the Adler Hotel to the Newcomb Art Museum and back. Their lunch menu offers some excellent, inexpensive choices and we decided on the 3 Sushi Rolls for $11.95 combo; our choices being the Spicy Tuna Roll, the Snow Crab Roll and the Avocado Roll. Along with the rolls, you also get a small salad with carrot ginger dressing (my guess) miso soup, and rice. For lunch, this is definitely enough food for two people. Our server, Khoung, was efficient and did a great job answering our questions. The Snow Crab roll was my favorite of the three, and while the Spicy Tuna Roll was definitely spicy to my wimpy palate, it wasn't too much spice. I thought the small patio that looks out over Freret Street was charming and would definitely love to sit there on my next visit.

This is my go-to spot for sushi in the city. While there are several more premium options for sushi, they come with premium price tags. None of them hold a candle to Origami in terms of value. The menu here is extensive, so it will be easy to find something for everyone in your party. The rolls are pretty standard, but all are good. Their nigiri in particular stands out for being excellent yet being almost half the price of some of the other more hyped sushi locations in the city. Their cocktails are great as well.

I have been a passionate connoisseur of Japanese food for over 20 years. Origami is a fusion of westernized Japanese cuisine that does not sacrifice too much of the authentic flavors and brings quality ingredients and generous portions. Take a look at some of my photos - the slices of fish are nice and thick and not overwhelmed by filler. Other things that we tried such as karaage and cucumber namasu were also really flavorful and well executed.

I rarely write negative reviews but the service here is so horrible. About 2 years ago, we had a bad experience at this restaurant. We were waiting over an hour for our sushi rolls to come out. The waitress asked us if we wanted the check. We explained that our rolls still hadn't come out. She rushed off without saying anything. We waited again until she returned with sushi rolls that we didn't order. We told her that wasn't our order, and she said the kitchen was busy. She asked if we could just eat those rolls because they didn't have time to make ours. We were only given 1 glass of wine free for this horrible experience.

We avoided this restaurant after our last time but decided to give it another try. Sadly, the service has not improved at all. We waited over an hour for sushi rolls during our lunch visit. We told the waiter we had to get back to work and he rudely told us the kitchen was busy. No apology or even empathy for our situation. When the food finally arrived, the waiter took it upon himself to box up our rolls which we never asked him to do. Since we walked to the restaurant and we were hungry, we didn't want to carry the rolls back in the heat. As we were leaving the restaurant, we heard the staff loudly complaining about us and how we didn't even take our rolls to go after they went to all the trouble to have them boxed up.

We will never again visit this restaurant given the poor service and the rude wait staff. We have never been treated like...

If I could leave zero stars, I would. My daughter and her friend both became violently ill within an hour of eating sushi here. We called the restaurant out of basic concern for public safety, not to ask for a refund (despite the overpriced 71$ for mediocre sushi). The response from management was appalling.

The manager cut me off, refused to even listen, and made comments to the effect of “these kids always do this, they’re grifters.” In other words, he dismissed local area students as scammers rather than take a legitimate health risk seriously. He then made a veiled comment about “having our credit card number.” In the background, I could hear a waitress reading my name from the caller ID, saying “is this the one you were talking about,” which made it sound like they were already expecting complaints. At one point the manager even admitted “this always happens.” That alone should be enough to keep people away.

The Louisiana Health Department has recently cited Origami Sushi for food protection, sanitation, and garbage/refuse violations. Those reports are public record. Add that history to what happened to us and you have a clear picture: unsafe food practices, dismissive management, and outright hostility when customers raise health concerns.

This is not just bad service. This is dangerous. If you value your health, your dignity, or even basic decency, avoid Origami Sushi on Freret Street...

Tl;dr: For two salmon avocado rolls, a beef yakisoba, and mediocre service, I think $45 was a ridiculous price.

The sushi is good and not too expensive. I got a beef yakisoba (stir fry noodles) recently and (1) it was priced on their website's menu as $5 cheaper than what they charged me for it, and (2) all of the beef inside was overcooked and tough. The dish was not worth $23, not even in terms of portion size.

I understand that they are busy but the service did not make up for the premium prices. If they are going charge higher prices, I think they should staff better.

2 examples: -I was on hold for 5 minutes to place my pickup order, something I've never experienced with other restaurants.

-When I came to pick up my order, the employee responsible helped two separate people before me. Both of those people had arrived after I arrived. I spoke up and then he got my food for me, after the other two people had been taken care of.

The interior atmosphere and outdoor seating are both very nice but I don't think I'll be coming pack because the prices are a bit silly for what I...
