If you're in the neighborhood and craving dim sum, this place is probably adequate. If you're the type of person who has been on a hunt for great dim sum in New York, enjoys trying and comparing dim sum restaurants, cares the experience of dining, and appreciates quality ingredients, this place is NOT for you. If you have read reviews and looked images and got the impression that this place has a fast food ambiance but perhaps the quality of the food is better than fast food, be warned: This is fast food. I would agree with Pete Wells in his New York Times review of AweSum DimSum that the dumplings are good, but I didn't think they were good enough to recommend someone go out of their way to try them. The pork buns had a very nice, light, airy dough, but the pork filling was dry and unexciting. The spare ribs were OK, but a few pieces of pork didn't taste fresh, and I prefer them with black beans. The shrimp dumplings were probably the best thing we ordered. They were plump and fresh and has a nice thin skin. This is probably a safe bet for someone trying this place for the first time. The Chinese broccoli was an embarrassment. It was pale and overcooked it tasted as if they didn't wash it thoroughly. I could see when they brought it out of the kitchen that it was badly cooked. The cooks shouldn't have let that leave the kitchen. The Oolong tea left a funny aftertaste in my mouth. The staff was pleasant enough. The clientele on a Sunday afternoon were mostly college students. Maybe I just ordered the wrong things, but from what I tried, I...
Read moreI accidentally stumbled upon this place with my 18 year old vegetarian daughter (who also happens to love Asian food). This place stands above the many numerous Chinese, Japanese, and Thai restaurants that I frequent more often than I want (Indian food lover here) because of my daughters. Awe Sum Dim Sum on E. 23rd street is the perfect mixture between fast food and more upscale sit down restaurant. The place is very spacious (unlike many other Manhattan restaurants), décor is modern and light. Everything is very clean (including restrooms). There are plenty of seats. Menu is vast, descriptions of ingredients are clear. There are several dessert items which was a big plus for me! There were several flavored unsweetened hot teas to drink with dessert. Jasmine hot tea was perfect. Food was given to us very fast. We ordered Vegetarian sampler, house dumplings (with squid and shrimp!), scallion pancake (I tend to order it in many places, but it was a step above all the ones I have tried in the past), and fried sesame balls (dessert). Good ingredients are used: big chunks of delicious mushrooms and some kind of green vegetables in dim sum and in spring rolls. Everything was absolutely delicious! Portions are just right size and price! I will make sure to stop for a bite at this place every time I am...
Read moreWent there for lunch today and overall a good experience. The server was pleasant
Had the BBQ Pork buns, Siu Mai, Sticky rice wrap, spring rolls, baked BBQ pork bun, turnip cake and beef rice rolls. It all came with a free iced hibiscus tea as well.
The only item I thought didn't taste great was the beef rice roll. The texture was a little too gluey for my taste.
Also, wish they would add woo gok to the menu.
The portions are smaller than normal on some of the dishes and more expensive than Chinatown, but not having to trek all the way to Chinatown is worth the extra cost and whenever we can eat indoors again the place looks very pleasant and modern.
Definitely would go again.
Update:
Went a second time and they now have BBQ Pork rice rolls, but bit sparse on the pork filling.
The baked BBQ pork buns were luke warm and the Sticky rice didn't have as much meat or taste as last time.
Still no woo gok available, seems only dim sum places in the...
