The four of us had dinner (a la carte not omakase) at Nama on a Sunday night of a long weekend. The overall comment on this restaurant is mediocre/subpar food, small food portions, poor service, and extremely overpriced menu.
Food: Most of the dishes are average at best. It is hugely disappointing given the price of the dishes, and their portions are small to average. We ordered a sushi roll with uni and the uni was not sweet and a bit bitter/fishy. The shrimp tempura was mostly batter with skinny and soggy shrimps that didn't even taste very fresh. Even the wagyu was not as tender and fatty as I have tried at other restaurants. They do have great desserts especially the matcha tiramisu. In general, very disappointed especially with the high prices.
Service: The server seemed very indifferent the whole time. We were brought to our table at our reservation time. The host seemed welcoming. However, once we have started ordering food, everything just went down hill. The first round of dishes (just two items) did not come until at least half an hour later. And then the second round of dishes took another 30-45 minutes after we finished our first round of food. And most of them are cold dishes or appetizers which should not have taken that long to prepare. The server was very diligent on refilling our sake glasses though. We ended up spending over 3.5 hours there for the meal.
Ambience: The restaurant was very fine-dining looking. However, my friend's seat was sticky and she had to ask a server to wipe it down, which should not have happened at a high-end restaurant like this one. There were about 3-4 other tables on the Sunday night of the long weekend (should have been a red flag). Employees were courteous in general but the service was disappointing and unacceptable at such restaurant.
DO NOT recommend going there. With this much money, there are PLENTY of better choices in the area. You are not missing out on anything if you skip out on...
Read moreWhat a fascinating restaurant. This had reached the rock bottom of ROI then proceeded to power drill its way down beyond rock bottom. So that you can enjoy some of the pure ridiculousness that is Nama without having to spend $800 per person, here are the highlights: Upon receiving the sake menu, we asked about a specific bottle of sake, to which the server said 'it's dry' then proceeded to describe three other sake that we had explicitly expressed no interest in We had mistakenly booked the table and not the omakase counter (fully on us, no points off for them). They said they would recreate the same menu just without the abalone for us. We said yes. Then 30 min later the same server returns to ask us if we want the course omakase. It was after a full hour and half a bottle of sake that we saw any food Speaking of the course, no explanation on the cost upfront, how many courses, or what it will be. Had we known they were just going to tack on a bunch of prices without telling us ($50 per person for Caviar that we didn't ask for), we would have ran out of there quicker than you could say Nama And on the food. Oh, the food. Truly one of the most atrociously executed Japanese cuisine I have had the misfortune to see in NYC at any price range. They use good quality ingredients and make it their mission to see how much they can make it unappealing. The seaweed on the hand roll was so soggy I could wipe down old stains with it. The sushi had such basic sushi rice such that I guarantee you you can make better ones just by the virtue of using a rice cooker. The tempura which is supposed to be a light, elegant coating of batter was about 70% by mass batter here
Please, if you consider yourself someone of nonzero taste, go ANYWHERE ELSE. Go to a nearby hot dog stand. There's a Nobu very nearby which is basically the same type of food but better and at half...
Read moreI would give 0 star if I can.
My experience at Nama at Aman New York was incredibly disappointing. We had made reservations in advance, looking forward to celebrating the birthday with a delightful evening. However, the entire ordeal left us thoroughly dissatisfied and angry.
During our meal, a waitress(picture below) carelessly spilled an entire pot of hot tea on my friend, leaving her clothes/dress soaked completely. To make matters worse, the tea was scalding, resulting in burns on my friend’s back. What makes us even more angry is the restaurant's response was shockingly indifferent; they showed no concern for our distress and failed to offer any form of compensation or resolution. (We are not asking for that but they should be doing that!!!)
As one of the most expensive fine dining establishments in New York, such a basic error is unacceptable. In our past fine dining experiences, when issues arose, restaurant managers typically offered complimentary services and apologized. However, here, we didn't receive even a modicum of the respect we deserved.
I strongly advise against choosing Nama at Aman New York, totally because of their abysmal performance in service and addressing customer issues. I hope my experience serves as a warning, prompting others to avoid this restaurant that falls short in handling problems...
