Lizzie's Diner — Restaurant in Owensboro

I stopped for lunch at 11:30 am on a Wednesday and the place was busy. Everything looked clean and in order. I was able to sit at a table and my server came right over. She was very pleasant and cheerful. She took my order of the Plate Lunch Special, Roast Beef Manhattan with Mashed potatoes & gravy, and mac & cheese.

After a short wait, about 5 minutes, she brought my lunch. Everything looked really good. The sandwich was served open-faced with one slice of white bread, roast beef, mashed potatoes, all topped with beef gravy. It was served with a garlic/cheddar biscuit.

The meat was tender and flavorful, I didn’t have to add salt or pepper, it was seasoned well. The mashed potatoes were creamy and not too stiff. The only thing I really didn’t care for was the mac & cheese. I thought that was lacking in flavor. The pasta was cooked well, and it had a fair amount of cheese sauce, it just could have used some seasoning.

I was very happy with my meal, and I thought the service was wonderful. I will definitely stop by here again, the next time I’m in the area.

UPDATE FROM 05/2023 I stopped for breakfast on a Wednesday at 8:30 am and there were only a few people in there. The server came right over, a very friendly and happy person, and took my order. I ordered the 2-2-2 plate, and it was two scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon and two biscuits with gravy, hashbrowns was also included.

My breakfast came right out, and everything was very fresh and tasty. The only thing I didn’t care for was the gravy, it was not my type that I like. This is how everyone else likes it, I just happen to like Bob Evans the best, this was too pasty to me, but as I said, this is my issue.

This is a small diner serving home cooked foods. The solo breakfast cook had 10 tickets for tables from two to eight plus takeout orders. He was amazing to watch. There was, understandably, a little bit of a wait time but when the food arrived it was as ordered. There were two waitresses who kept everyone's drinks filled and let us know the order would be out soon and apologized for the wait time. We ordered the 1-1-1 egg, bacon, toast, home fries, tomato, coffee and water and pancakes with hash browns and water. Everything cooked as ordered. The syrup did not have much flavor other than sweet and we needed to salt and pepper our eggs and potatoes, just minor issues. I will get the hash browns next time. No photos because we just came from an appointment and we were almost hangry, 😂 (not the cafe's fault). The two meals were just over $16.00. We tipped the cook and the waitress. My experience wasnt good first time around. Took quite a while to get our food and even get our drinks. Got a bacon cheeseburger with a side of fries, bacon wasn't fully cooked and the fries weren't fully cooked and had no salt. Cheese was cold on the burger. Cook had no hair net on...

All that being said, they all seem to be very inexperienced. I'll wait about a year and return to see if they improve after they get a little experience, if they survive that long. But I don't have my hopes up. You can drive a short distance to Gary's and get a 10x better meal for the same price.

All in all i hope to be able to change my review a year from now, i wish them the best but in their current state i think their food isnt aweful but it isnt...
