This restaurant is simply amazing. My wife and I travel a lot together for work and we always make a point to seek out the best places in the cities we visit for fine food and drink. We visited Mariposa and it more than exceeded our expectations.
This restaurant has a charming and intimate setting inside the Silver Lake Lodge. The restaurant combines a fine ski lodge dining experience with a quaint “locals only” feel. The restaurant staff it’s professional from the woman who greeted and sat us to our server who was spectacular.
What sets this place apart from other fine restaurants I have visited is the combination of delicious and innovative courses with an extremely well curated wine list. I was extremely impressed with the wine selection both by the bottle and by the glass. The person who created this list is extremely knowledgeable in both old world and new world wines as the wines they were offering by the glass were wines I have purchased for my own cellar. Some restaurants skimp on the wines hoping you will just pick expensive choices but this restaurant combined extremely good value for money and the option for both 3 ounce and 6 ounce pours via their Coravin system. My wife and I started with champagne and ended with a 2013 Spottswoode Napa Cab- one of the best vintages in Napa of all time and a 99 point wine.
What made our experience most special was our server Juiliane (please correct me if wrong and I will correct it). She was first rate and paired our favorite courses with the perfect wine. Our two favorite courses, recommended by the server, was the Foie Gras and waffle and the cauliflower. The foie gras was out of this world and was severed with the most unique waffle I have ever tried. This is a must not miss even if you are not a Foie Gras fan. Be sure to try with a glass of Sauternes with it like we did. The cauliflower was also spectacular. It is not something you would typically order as a stand alone course but I am glad we did. We finished it up with the roasted duck paired with my favorite wine of the night, the Spottswoode Cabernet.
I highly recommend this place and this restaurant is a must visit place for anyone who loves great food and service who visits the Deer Valley resort. Kudos to the restaurant and staff as they have a first rate operation with food and service of the...
Read moreSome restaurants attain the dubious achievement of transitioning from outstanding, to lazy incompetence, to indifferent contempt for their customers. Mariposa has made this transformation in spectacular fashion. I’ve been coming to Mariposa for more than 20 years, and have had some truly phenomenal meals here. We would bring friends to the restaurant when they visited from out of town. Our experience tonight, though, is an example of how far and how fast an outstanding restaurant can go from great to truly awful. The highlights: the dining room is colder than a meat locker, so don’t check your coat; the caviar fries for 33 dollars are the same fries you’d get with a burger in the cafeteria with a gram of fish eggs; ours arrived cold. The ahi was so fishy it was inedible; the tasting menu is the same price as last year, with 3 courses instead of five (or seven) but portion size is still the same (so make a second reservation at another restaurant because you’ll still be hungry); there’s no wine pairing now, and the list of wines by the glass is meager. Our server who was very nice and trying hard had not been adequately trained. The busser was MIA. We raised our concerns with the manager, who was sympathetic but gave us the Ikon discount, and comped our bottle of water. With tip, we spent more than 200 per person, with one drink each. If you’ve enjoyed Mariposa in the past you’ll be blown away at how bad it’s become. If you’ve never been, you’ll be amazed that a restaurant experience at a place like Deer Valley could be so abysmal. It’s a bit sad to acknowledge that I won’t be coming back after having been a fan...
Read moreThis review is for Mariposa’s tasting menu on a Friday in March 2022. No pairings.
Pros: Excellent service Meats were properly cooked
Cons: Most of the dishes were extremely salty. One of them was a truffle tart, which seemed good otherwise but I deemed it inedible because of over seasoning. Some of the dry food items (as opposed to soups or broth) were cold, as in not warm. This is unacceptable, as we visited with an early reservation and the restaurant was not busy Ordered a bottle of wine (a Sancerre) that the restaurant did not have. Since Mariposa does not offer an extensive wine list, one would at least expect that it would be fully stocked with the wine list. Poor style and décor: Food styling was a bit old fashioned, food could be more visually appealing with some more modern changes. For the restaurant itself, it would feel more pleasant with some new china, shades and décor in general. This can be achieved while keeping its signature cozy-lodge feel.
Though Utah is not known for its culinary scene, I had expected better from Mariposa. And definitely much higher quality for fine-dining prices (6-course pre-fix dinner x 2, 1 bottle of wine, 1 beer, 1 extra course, +tax...
