BEST DINING IN KC AREA!!!! I have eaten in great restaurants around the world, and Story continues to be one of the best I have ever experienced. If you have never been there, GO! If you have been, but not gone back, GO! Two of us went last night and shared 5 different items, all were incredible. Their green salad is so fresh and flavorful, I dream about this salad; I love the hint of mint and pistachios too! The gazpacho was lovely, and the tiny fresh corn kernels garnish had a little mouth-bursting experience that was subtle yet fantastic! And I cannot say enough great things about the heirloom tomato salad; the goat cheese schmeer was lovely, as was the dressing. And I'm not sure what the garnish was, but it added a little bit of a delicate crisp. The main event though in this dish were the incredible tomatoes, and can I shout from the rooftops - they were peeled! How often does a restaurant, or anyone for that matter, peel tomatoes? Well, we all should! They are so much sweeter this way, and it helped enhance the delicate flavors in this dish! Also, we had the lobster tagliatelle, and it was awesome, as always. The sauce was flavorful but also delicate enough to allow the sweet flavor of the lobster to come through, and the homemade pasta was perfect! Dessert was a special butter cake with a blueberry compote, which was an excellent close for this lite dinner. I must also note their wine selection by the glass is carefully curated and wonderful, and their cocktails are fantastic as well, and customizable. OH - and I cannot get enough of their housemade bread and butter- I'm just saying! Although we didn't have the halibut last night, I've had it many times before and it is always fantastic! Service is incredible here, too, and the ambiance aligns with the rest of the fantastic dining experience! Hats off to owners Chef Carl and Susan Thorne-Thomsen! Carl has taken his earlier career Michael Smith experience to a whole new level! DO NOT MISS this...
Read moreWe brought some friends from out of town last night to Story for an 8pm reservation. Our server, we joked, gave the impression his girlfriend had just broken up with him. One of our friends ordered steamed veggies ($28) due to dietary restrictions- it was brought with what appeared to be butter on it which he cannot eat. We asked the server if it was butter and his response was “oh yea it has a ton of butter ALL over it.” When we communicated he couldn’t eat that the server went off and got the manager. The manager came over, took the plate and we requested it to just be removed from the bill. No big deal. He came back with the plate a few minutes later however and said he talked to the chef and it was actually oil. We said the server told us it was butter and he replied “well, he is apparently misinformed” placing the plate back on the table… zero apology. The server then came and announced “last call” from the bar which is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard at a fine dining establishment. He then took a full cocktail from the table and referred to it as a “dead soldier.” When we left we walked by the bartender, our server, and the manager and no one acknowledged we were leaving. No thank you, goodbye, come again just total silence. There were still other tables in there at this time, too. It was the strangest several hundred dollars we spent! Honestly, the food was (butter situation aside) without fault and truly delicious. The front of the house was incredibly underwhelming and unprofessional at best. I do not recommend. If I were the chef I would be incredibly concerned because people aren’t going to want to come back when they feel like they are being a nuisance for...

Everything was spot on, from the start with a couple dirty martinis made just the way we like them. Then on to french fries (pom frites really), followed by beets and caesar salads. The caesar was was balanced and fresh so I didn't miss the anchovies. My wife's beets salad was wonderful with a smokey quality over a subtle sweetness.
And dude... there's a reason the short ribs have been on the menu for 13(?) years. Exquisite is the only way I could sum that up. When the waiter brought it out I almost balked because he did not bring a meat knife, then I realized I could have cut it with a spoon. Delicious and tender with a light sauce that let the flavors shine on a little bed of gnocchi and green beans that somehow were still squeaky! Then the tempura dipped onion rings redefined that side forever.
Wife had the dinner sized portion of the raviolis and again, wonderful and balanced with each of the flavors blending quietly together while still maintaining their own.
Wine list is not crazy but has a very nice selection to go with any of these dishes and a fine palate. I even got turned on to Belle de Brillet Liqueur Cognac (like a warm fireside embrace) to pair perfectly with my lemon cake. The wife had the carrot cake, which again will raise that bar to new heights, and finished up with a perfect cup of espresso.
