On a Sunday at lunchtime the parking lot was practically empty, and we wondered if there was a reason why. We should have taken the hint. When we went inside the place was huge, but only had about six tables seated. We stood at the hostess station for several minutes while multiple employees ignored us. The waiting area started to fill up, and finally a gentleman who appeared to be a manager, came over and asked for our name. He said he was understaffed due to multiple call-offs, and we'd be seated when his next waitress came on shift at 1 o'clock. Some people decided to leave, but we stuck it out because we wanted to try somewhere we'd never been. When the waitress came in, she was immediately given 5-6 tables. You can imagine how that was for her all at once. Considering the adversity though, she did pretty well and I could tell she was definitely not a rookie at waitressing. Kudos to her and her demeanor throughout our experience there. We ordered the pretzel sticks for an appetizer, and they were excellent, no complaints. For meals we ordered the pick two smokehouse favorites to build our own meals, and we both chose the smoked turkey and smoked bone-in wings. We both thought the turkey was decent, although it was barely warm when served. The bone-in wings though, were awful. They were so overcooked, brittle, and dry I was shocked they'd even bring them out. The sauce drizzled over, may have been an attempt to mask the dryness, but that definitely did not work. For a restaurant that's supposed to be known for their bone-in wings, we were so disappointed. They seriously looked like they'd been smoked days ago and then reheated (overly). For side dishes, we collectively ordered mac and cheese (premium upgrade), mashed potatoes and gravy, and baked beans. The mac and cheese was very ordinary, definitely not worth the upgrade. It also seemed reheated as we had to stir it when it arrived. The mashed potatoes were also barely warm but edible. The baked beans were decent. Overall, I'm sure the locals are aware of the quality here, but now so am I. I feel sorry that they were understaffed when we showed up, but those are times when a manager should maybe seat tables and take drink orders to help, not leave people at the door. At the peak of our visit, only a maximum of probably 16-18 tables were seated on a Sunday at lunchtime, and if that is normal, I can't imagine this place will be open much longer. I had high hopes for some good wings, and sadly were probably some of the worst I'd tasted. This one definitely fell short of...
Read moreSmokey Bones in Pittsburgh is an interesting mixed bag when it comes to dining experiences. Nestled at 6050 Robinson Centre Dr, the establishment offers a decent enough dining opportunity for those looking for a no-fuss meal.
The customer service, to begin with, was passable. The staff did their job, ensuring orders were taken and delivered in a timely manner. However, the warmth and engagement one would expect from a restaurant of any caliber seemed to be missing. It's serviceable but lacks that touch of genuine hospitality that turns a meal into an experience.
In terms of pricing, Smokey Bones hits the mark of fairness. You get what you pay for, without feeling like you've been shortchanged. But the same can't be said for all of their dishes. I opted for the filet mignon medallions, and while they were cooked to perfection, the flavor profile left a lot to be desired. They tasted rather bland, lacking the robust flavors one would associate with such a prime cut of meat. It was a decent meal but nothing that would leave a lasting impression or beckon a revisit.
The atmosphere, unfortunately, mirrored the sentiment of the food. The ambiance felt more like a low-end eatery rather than a place where you'd want to savor a meal and make memories. The decor and setup lacked the charm or uniqueness that sets a restaurant apart from its competition.
To sum it up, Smokey Bones in Pittsburgh offers an adequate dining experience. It's a place to grab a quick bite if you're in the area, but if you're looking for a memorable meal or a warm, inviting atmosphere, you might want to explore...
Read moreI want to start this off by saying i have 8 years of restaurant and customer service work in a busy atmosphere. Me and my 2 friends stopped in after a day of paintball. The hostess was rude right out of the gate. Server got our drink order but only brought out 2 of the drinks because they were out of dr pepper. She then proceeded to not return to the table for 5-8 minutes and just dropped off the drink but not get the order. We finally get to order after another 5-8 minute wait. No big deal I understand they were busy. We got our loaded baked potato and then waited. No drink refill were offered. No one bothered to check in. We ordered at 7:15. At 8:10 the manager come out and drops off the food apologizing for the wait. He was kind and offered a free dessert. We had to decline as we had a 2+ hour drive home and could not wait for the kitchen to get it out. We did ask for drink refills though. Manager then informs us that the sprite is out as well so we asked for a sweet tea instead. Server was sent back out with the 1st refills of the night and brought out a sprite that was straight soda water. Our chicken was undercooked but we did not see her until I walked to the bar to ask for a box and check. We paid full price for our meal. We do not get to go out often and was extremely dissatisfied with our service.
Edit to say that our servers...
