Today I had the privilege to try breakfast at Hula Moon. We were greeted by a lovely lady who seemed to be running the grill/kitchen, who said "oh you are ordering take out? You are going to have to wait a while". At 6:30am that's exactly the type of greeting that starts your Sunday off right.
An older gentlemen took our order. I ordered the egg, spinach and cheese breakfast sandwich on an English muffin but asked to add mushrooms. "Sure, you can" the man replied. Quickly he wrote down my wife's order as well and procured us coffee and orange juice, for which we paid promptly. Then we walked outside to the curb where we did wait quite some time for the egg sandwiches. Once we were presented with our order, we graciously thanked the man, paying close attention to the signs in the restaurant that clearly stated "save the drama for your mama" and "let me drop everything and listen to your problem."
Without further ado, we took our breakfast a short walk to the nearby Tuna Pier where we sat down to unwrap and enjoy our breakfast...only to find that there was no top half of the English muffin on my spinach cheese and egg. Finding myself in crisis with no ability to eat the 2 fried eggs and three tiny pieces of shriveled spinach because no fork had been provided (this was no longer a sandwich), I further discovered that paying extra for mushrooms had yielded no result, as I could not find a single mushroom in my sandwich. Alas, all of the cheese had slid off of the sandwich into a pool, covering the single orange slice that accompanied the sandwich in it's sandwich size styrofoam containers.
I considered walking the 10 minutes back to advise the restaurant of the error, but the signs posted inside the restaurant, as mentioned above, made me feel like that might be a worthless endeavor. I used my fingers to eat the two eggs and half English muffin. As I pondered my Karma and cursed the universe for my luck, I walked back to the b&b I was staying at and had some granola and yogurt.
Hula Moon, I will be back to order another breakfast sandwich, but it had better be a triple decker with mushrooms on the top deck, and you better not charge me extra because you owe that to me!
I also wonder if there are any other folks out there missing the bottom half of their English...
Read moreThe food is genuinely great. The service is substantively friendly (or maybe just put up with my grouchy pre-coffee self?). I would definitely go for the sausage-egg-cheese breakfast sandwich if you aren't terribly hungry. It's a ton of flavor, relatively cheap, and delicious.
My only grip, and it's a big one, is the cash-only policy. I spent 20 minutes not sitting with my wife and friends because I was told that an ATM was just across the street. Believe me, there is no ATM across the street. In fact, the next 2 ATMs Google lead me to within walking distance were all closed. Only after hiking through the streets of Rockport (lovely town by the way) did I find my 3rd ATM that had cash. By this point my wife had texted me that the food has long since arrived and they were already eating (can hardly blame them).
I doubt I'll ever enjoy Hula Moon's delicious sausage-egg-and-cheese breakfast sandwich again because I never carry cash. To be truthful, I hardly use my own credit cards any more since Apple Pay and Android Pay are so ubiquitous around the greater Boston area.
Also, save yourself the hassle and stop at the ATM at the Rockport Market (right next to the pizza place right up the road) if you're dropping in for breakfast before 10am. All the other ATMs...
Read moreHula Moon is a new casual dining restaurant with a view of one of Rockport's many inlets. There is a bar, but we were a family with teens and didn't drink.
The restaurant is clearly in its early days and having some growing pains - it took a while to be noticed or to get a menu, and despite the low light levels, nobody ever turned the lights on.
This having been said, the menu was reasonable, and the food (both presentation and taste) we're phenomenal.
Hubby had a smash burger, both teens had pasta Alfredo, and I had veggie pasta with corn, asparagus and peas. They were presented with blue orchids on the side by a waitress who knew the menu. It came to us hot and beautifully presented.
We paid about $17 per plate for really wonderful food. Assuming they get their feet under them, there's no reason this shouldn't become a cornerstone restaurant...
