Garcia Barbecue, a relatively new addition to the San Antonio dining scene, has quickly gained a reputation since moving from a food truck to its brick-and-mortar location this past summer. Featured in Texas Monthly, I decided to check it out for myself, and here’s my experience.
Located in a small shopping center near the Medical Center, Garcia Barbecue is tucked into the end of the strip with a convenient drive-thru. We arrived around noon on a Saturday and found the spot bustling with activity, although there were still plenty of tables available. The ordering process was smooth with a digital menu that made everything easy to read. After a short wait, we were able to place our order. They do have a hand written chalkboard sign that they put out front if they run out of barbecue. So, beware, don’t go too late.
I opted for a two-meat plate with pork ribs and chicken, alongside sides of potato salad and green beans. My friend went for the sliced turkey and brisket, also with the potato salad and green beans. The food was brought to our table shortly after we sat down, and the presentation was appealing. The green beans, in particular, stood out – they were cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of seasoning and a generous mix of tomatoes, bacon, and onions. Both my friend and I agreed that these were some of the best green beans we've had in a while.
The chicken was flavorful, with a well-balanced rub that added depth without overpowering the meat. The pork ribs were also seasoned well, and the rub gave them a nice balance of smoky and savory flavors. My friend was particularly fond of the brisket, though she felt the turkey was just okay. The meal was also served with potato bread. My friend and I both ordered the potatoes salad. The potato salad had good consistency. My friend thought it was to vinegary, but I liked the flavor and tartness. I personally think that a jalapeño bread would pair well with the barbecue, maybe add some butter that could be added to the bread.
The restaurant itself is cozy, with about 15 tables and a casual, no-frills atmosphere. Even though it was a busy lunchtime, the service was quick and efficient, and our food arrived hot.
After our meal, we walked over to the nearby Italian restaurant also mentioned in the Texas Monthly article.
Overall, I highly recommend Garcia Barbecue. The food is flavorful, well-seasoned, and served hot. Whether you're a fan of classic barbecue or just looking for a new spot in the Medical Center area, Garcia Barbecue is definitely...
Read moreI decided to try this place when i found it looking for bbq places near my work. I saw it wasn't too far away, and sure, why not. Once I got there, I noticed there was a decent number of people in the restaurant. One thing that did catch my attention when walking in right off the bat was I really didn't get that bbq smell from most places. I figured this was due to it being new. I got in line and walked up to the counter. Upon looking at the menu, the next thing was the bbq plates on the menu. They had a 1 or 2 meat plate. The catch is if you want brisket and sausage plate(which is a go to for many people) you have to pay an up charge of 2 or 3 dollars more on top of the 14 bucks for the 2 meat plate. 2 bucks is for 1/4lb, and 3 is for a 1/3lb of brisket. This immediately made me hesitate to get my food. I did, however, think maybe it's really great brisket, so I continue on with my order. I then proceeded to order my 2 sides, which were charro beans and cream corn, with a large sweet tea. I found a spot to sit and waited for my order to be brought out, which didn't take long at all. Once I got my plate, my eagerness to try this new bbq place quickly disappeared. I was presented with 2 slices of brisket, which were supposed to be 1/4lb, and a sausage link that was sliced but did have some charing on it. The brisket had a small smoke ring on it but no flavor that stood out. I have a had better at Bill Miller's. I was only able to eat one piece of my brisket since the other was about 90% fat. The sausage lacked any flavor. Even if it is a store bought brand, they could have added a light coat of sauce with some seasoning to bring their own flavor to it. The "charro" beans looked and tasted like ranch style beans with sausage in it. This is San Antonio TX a place with a large Hispanic population. If you are selling charro beans, you will be judged heavily on them. The cream corn was nowhere near creamy. It had a very runny, watery consistency. The flavor was not strong, but ok. The sweet tea was great, though. Overall, I did eat most of my food because I just spent 23 bucks on it. The staff did keep the seating area clean and were waking around asking people if they were doing fine and if they needed anything else. I think there is definitely room for improvement and growth with the food. I am willing to go back in 2 months and see how things are going then and if any changes...
Read moreThis was mine & my family’s first time there & honestly it was ruined as soon as we got in, the girl at the front wasn’t welcoming at all seemed like she was having a bad day (we all do) I brushed it off but when it came to us getting our food everything was cold the pulled pork was probably the worst for me my husband and 2 toddlers I paid about 100$ I paid extra to get fries and tots because the meals already come with chips and a juice as it says on the menu (they have no juices) (they don’t come with chips) when I asked for a juice she said they didn’t have any juice looked at me like I was insulting her for asking then offered soda my kids don’t like soda it’s still spicy for them there kids so I just got them water which again fine the brisket was cold and hard, the cream corn wasn’t really cream corn the Mac was the best thing there honestly the potato salad was 0/10 my husband literally took a bite and spit it out over all 100$ was wasted and on top of all of that when the food was brought the girl threw the burning hot Trey down in front of my 1 year old when the whole table was open no idea why the Trey was hot and all the food was cold also for all the bbq you order you get 2 pieces of bread 2 tortillas and that’s it I wouldn’t really waste your time eating here if you genuinely like bbq this isn’t it it’s very much fast food and...
