I had not been here since before Covid. I was craving fried chicken and dropped by to not be able to find it! It's next to Tin's that is closed. But all I saw were obscured storefront windows and no indication of an entrance. Darn, Chicken G's also went out of business. I walked around the partial block to Belden Lane--remembering how noisy and festive that was on Bastille Day (today) pre-Covid. But Belden was desolate. I decided to walk south to another fried chicken shop on New Montgomery when I saw through Chicken G's back windows someone walking inside. Was that a building management employee or had the entrance been moved to Belden? Nope. I went back to Kearny, wondered if Google needed to be updated, but noticed an isolated metal framed glass door that I had mistaken for the building's lobby door. I looked inside and saw a deserted space with an orange sofa. I tried pulling and was unable to open the door. Definitely out of business. As an experiment I pressed the ADA switch and the door did not pop open. Then, I yanked very hard and it opened. It felt like trying to sneak into a stealthy private club. Why?
Good news is that the fried chicken is as tasty as ever: moist, tender, slightly pepperish, a tiny bit salty, with very light crispy batter. Just right. And a big plus. The woman at the register was super cordial, informative, and accommodating. I don't eat the sides (just the fried chicken), but could not see on the menu how to avoid all that. I ended up taking several orders home with me and hope my neighbors will like the fries and slaw. I...
Read moreI've been wanting to try Chicken G's for awhile and I'm glad I got the chance today.
I ordered the Big G, which is a huge piece of fried chicken with lettuce, tomato, and onion with a "tangy garlic sauce." I unfortunately didn't taste much of the sauce. I think it would've brought the needed acidity to balance the fried chicken. I think pickles would've helped, too.
But it was a decent fried chicken. It's is really crispy on the outside and very juice on the inside. I just wish it had more flavor. It also came with fries and they were pretty good. It looks like they are dusted with paprika, or maybe bay seasoning though it didn't taste like it. The portion of fries look small compared to the massive piece of chicken, but I think it's the right amount.
This is probably one of the more affordable options in the area since the sandwich does come with a side.
I got my food to go, so I can't comment on the ambiance. They have couches to sit on while you wait for your order. They're definitely not corporate-furniture - perhaps owned by the owners at one point. But they're comfy.
The woman who took my order was nice and I got my food pretty quickly.
I'm not sure I'd get the sandwich again. But I do like the chicken and maybe a combo meal that comes with Texas toast will be more...
Read moreI've been a regular at Chicken G’s for quite some time now, and the consistency of their food has always been remarkable. Whether it’s a busy lunch hour or a quiet evening, the quality and flavor of their dishes never waver.
Two aspects, in particular, make Chicken G’s stand out from other places:
The Chai: Nowhere else have I encountered chai as delightful as the one served here. It’s not just good; it’s absolutely delicious and free. This small gesture adds an extra layer of warmth and hospitality to the dining experience.
Prayer Area: For local Muslims, especially those working nearby, the provision of a dedicated prayer area is a significant plus. It’s a thoughtful addition that shows Chicken G’s commitment to accommodating the needs of all their patrons. I sincerely hope they continue this practice.
Additionally, the employees, like Andres and Earl, always meet people with a smile and make you feel welcome, providing an enjoyable experience every time. Their friendliness and professionalism enhance the overall atmosphere, making Chicken G’s more than just a place to eat; it’s a community-friendly space that goes the extra mile to make everyone...
