My family stopped here as "tourists". It was our first time in the store. WIt was very hot so we went straight to the icecream counter once we saw it. It was not a great experience. The lady scooping icecream wasn't friendly or helpful. I ordered first and got a scoop in a cup. My son wanted a scoop in a cone. When I asked for it she said "What kind of cone". I looked at the options and said "A regular one" she said "I don't know what regular is." I tried to explain a regular cone but she just stared at me to the point where I just asked for it in a cup and she didn't seem to care at all. My son kept telling me he wanted a cone, I just asked him to be quiet. It would have been helpful to have a list if all the choices if customers are expected to give an exact name to order. A regular/standard icecream cone should be understood. She also yelled to the cashier when I was checking out that I had more icecream than I was attempting to pay for which was incorrect. I ordered for me and my two sons. I told the cashier 3. My 16 year old and husband were behind me and they ordered a cup as well. The lady was still scooping it. Me and my sins were at the register with our 3. I told the cashier 3 because that is all I was paying for but the scoop lady yelled "No four!" to which I looked at the cashier and told her "No, it's three. Her's is separate." I don't usually complain about service in my reviews but I feel this is good info to know in advance so you won't have the same experience I did. Know what you want and how to order before stepping up. How is that possible when you need to look at the options and flavors to choose? I have no clue but HURRY UP! When the cashier asks how many you have if there are multiple people in your group and you are paying separate, go ahead and tell them when you tell them how many you're paying for. "I'm paying for these 3, the people behind me are separate."
The shop is small like most others but their walkways seemed alot smaller/tighter than the other candy shops. There isn't much room for two people to pass each other when first entering or while at the icecream counter.
The icecream was delicious. The size of the scoop was adequate and the price of $5 seems fair. Also, the lady who checked us out was very friendly and nice. After the icecream experience my family just left as quick as we could and didn't bother looking at candy. If I could do it again, I would skip the icecream and stick with shopping for...
Read moreI am extremely disappointed with the quality of the pralines. I have shipped them to loved ones previously, this is the first time I sent some to myself. They are not the same quality that I am am used to when I've bought in your stores.
My first reaction, when I opened the gift box, was that the pralines looked commercialized in identical packages, as opposed to the individually shaped pralines I have bought at your shops for decades. I felt like I should be restocking a shelf somewhere.
For the first time, I sent some to my daughter at the CDC in Atlanta, and she was the first to express her disappointment and tactfully told me save my money. As a native Charleston-ian, she felt ripped off. She then went to Savannah over Memorial Day weekend, and said she walked by your store a few times and refused to stop by out of retaliation in response to the poor quality product she received.
I agree with her analysis. "They are all the same size, in cellophane bags b/c they were made by a machine and they are dry and you have to "snap" a piece off b/c they've they are not soft and fresh b/c they've been stored in a warehouse."
My shipment that was going out on the 30th., are going to a special person, and THESE pralines are not the quality of gift I typical bestow upon Dr. A______. Actually, I am very embarrassed. She is two-years new to Charleston, and these will be her first pralines. I was hoping to impress her!!! I now realize that I could have gone to Walgreens and bought a Three Musketeer that would have been fresher and less expensive. But equal quality.
I really am heartbroken to give gifts, that I thought were special, but are less than ordinary.

Read moreWe walked in at 8:56AM and were told very rudely that “we don’t open until 9” by Erica (name on receipt). Short female with pink hair. Then she continued to ignore us as we walked around the fudge counter. I stood for several minutes and finally had to ask for help. Erica rolled her eyes and said, “which one do you want?” She then proceeding to grab a piece of fudge and slam it on the scale. Finally, I asked for a pound of pralines, and she huffed and asked the guy making pralines “how long before they are ready?” (They had hundreds made on sheet pans.) She made sure to show her annoyance that she had to get a pan and bring it over to her side of the store. Then she mean mugged us the entire time she rang us up. This was the absolute worst experience I’ve ever had at any River Street Sweets. My whole family grew up in Savannah, and we visit often and always make a stop here. Management needs to do a better job of hiring people that want to work in customer service. And if you are that miserable at your job, then go get another one.
I wrote the customer service email the same day as this review and have heard nothing further from River...
