Restaurant Week is a special time for me and my wife. Although we love to eat out, it's not always financially feasible. We budget specifically to go out many times during restaurant week and spend time planning which restaurants to go to. We had decided on North Hill being one of five we got to go to this year. It was very high on both of our lists, and when we planned with our large group of friends which restaurant to all try together North Hill was the winner. You never know what to expect trying somewhere new, but hopes we're high. They graciously accepted our large reservation even though they have a small interior space. I believe they even stayed open late on a day they aren't normally open just to accommodate us.
My wife and I shared each dish for a total of 6 dishes between the time of us, and each dish was excellent. We got the crab cakes and the brussel sprouts as the Starters. Both were very good, even though the crab cakes were a little intense. For Entreés, we got the Bahn Mi Pizza, which was better than any Bahn Mi I've had (I do love pizza a lot), and the Miso Salmon, which was simple but satisfying. For Dessert, we got the S'mores bread pudding and the peanut butter cookie skillet which came with peanut butter chocolate ice cream. Both desserts were seemingly made with me in mind and so of course they were delicious.
If you read the reviews, and get to interact with the owner, like we had the privilege, it's easy to see this is a place that is determined to get it right. They accept feedback and make continual improvements. The food was a good balance of comfortable and innovative. You only get a menu like that by trying new things and listening to the people you are serving. It's no Michelin star restaurant, at least not yet, but I think it's accomplishing something equally special and rare. My experience there was certainly skewed by it being restaurant week and having so many of my friends around, but there is a very real possibility I've found a new favorite place. Somewhere I would truly love to become a regular. We have one more restaurant to try for restaurant week, but I'm pretty confident they aren't going to...
Read moreI had a completely different experience that everyone else here. This bar is in my neighborhood and I was super excited to meet friends here and try it out. We got there at noon. The atmosphere is amazing, the seating areas are great. The seats suck, but that my fault for having a wide tush. The menu was limited. Nothing on the menu we really wanted. So we had to make do. I noticed a lot of people would look at the menu then leave. That happened five times while we were there.
The owner was our server. He was very friendly, but seemed a tad frazzled. Took a while to get service. There were only three tables. When we asked if we could order off the full menu he explained not until 3pm because he was the only one there. Our first two drinks were made perfectly. Heavy on the pour too. So we were OK with the limited menu. I ordered a ceaser because I have wheat induced asthma. My friend ordered a house salad, as the owner said rabbit food, and my other friend the sandwich. I asked for no croutons, my friend asked for ranch. For the price I expected real ceaser, anchovies, the works, and the salad to be dressed. Nope.
When the second set of drinks came out he mixed our two drinks together. The Rita and Mai Tai were like half run half tequila. It was very odd. My friend got blue cheese instead of ranch, I got croutons. The sandwich was OK, but the chips were better than the sandwich said my other friend.
The owner was very concerned my friend didn't eat her salad. Well like he said it was rabbit food and it came with blue cheese not ranch. And I had to pick out my croutons. We didn't say anything, poor guy was at his limit. We wanted to split the check but the owner said he couldn't because his POS system was very bad and he didn't know it well.
He practically begged us to come back at 3pm. I would for drinks and atmosphere and considering I can walk home.
My only advice is hire a mid day crew or just don't open until 3pm. When I suggested to my friend we try again some other time she said no way. Given they are in my neighborhood, I'm willing to try again. Even...
Read moreWe have been wanting to try North Hill for quite some time. Our anniversary seemed like a great time. We arrived and tried to sit on the top deck but it was too windy and cold so we moved inside. I guess they didn't think anyone would sit outside , because all of the tables were filthy. I thought maybe once we sat there the waitress would clean it up...but she sat us and walked away without any hesitation or attempt to wash it. We tried to find something to order but their menu is so scant it was difficult. There are only 2 choices of burgers...so if you don't like French onion or Bleu cheese...I guess you're out of luck? Only 4 appetizers and none sounded appetizing. There are only a few entrees on the menu like Gouda Mac n cheese and salmon....but they are ALL listed as not available. Printed right on the menu! Then why even have them there at all? In the end it didn't really matter because when we ordered, the cook "didn't have any soup". I wanted to order the cheeseburger soup (the only soup on the menu) but they were out. Since it was the only thing on the menu I was interested in we decided to leave the waitress $5 and cut our losses. The waitress was nice and had followed us upstairs...then downstairs and it wasn't her fault that the menu is a joke, so we felt like she deserved something. As we were making our exit we heard an older couple sitting at a table behind us trying to order --with the waitress was telling them all the things on the menu they couldn't order/were out of, etc. This place says it's a restaurant and bar...from what we experienced it should be the other way around....or maybe "a bar with occasional food...IF we aren't out of everything". We ended up going to another restaurant/bar that consistently provides good food....and actually has the items on their menu. I really wish I would have done more research before we went here. The owner leaves nasty responses to negative reviews and clearly isn't interested in using constructive criticism to improve his business. First impressions matter and we will...
