This review is based on breakfast and I may modify if and when I have a better experience for lunch. (No dinner served, strictly breakfast and lunch).
I love little, greasy spoons with character, and the Green Lantern definitely has character. I went there on a cold, winter morning, and the warm inside with nice, hot coffee. Staff was attentive. For these reasons, it does not get less than an average 3-stars.
The food... One has to work hard to mess-up this order: eggs over easy, hash browns, wheat toast, and ham. Easy, right? Almost everything was adequate, except for the ham. I was expecting a ham steak. I think everyone in the US would be expecting a ham steak. But here is what I was served: 2, slice of a chopped ham loaf, 1/4 inch thick each. Basically, someone went to the deli counter and bought a large loaf of chopped ham. They slice of tranches, and warm them up to serve as breakfast ham. The quantity was generous, i.e. you get a lot of ham-food-product for your $-buck. No thanks! I'm calling this Velveeta Ham (albeit, I actually like Velveeta).
I'm going to try to make lunch, and hopefully I will edit this review with an...
Read moreIve been told to come here for years and finally did...I saw they had a fried bologna sandwich and decided to go for that with a small bowl of chili. I was disappointed in both items. The fried bologna sandwich was only cooked on a flat top for about five minutes- far too quick...and served on regular white bread. The bologna was only mildly charred and still cold raw pink in the middle. The cheese on top was just a cold American slice with no melt effort to it. The chili was...well pretty terrible for a Toledo spot. Bland and lifeless. Basically tomato sauce seasoned with chili powder, salt, maybe a little allspice or nutmeg, and ground beef and beans. Thin, runny and just not satisfying. If I had gotten their chili mac or other chili inclusive options I would have been disappointed.
Finding a place with fried thick cut bologna is difficult- so if you offer it, make sure the cook is taking it where it needs to go instead of trying to get in on a plate as fast as some scrambled eggs.
But a good atmosphere and...
Read moreUnderstaffed for dinnertime, with only one of the owners serving. I understand and don't necessarily reduce my rating for that. What I did rate on was that she told my friend (a bigger man, yes) that he could move the table to give himself more room. He didn't need more room but someone in service should never make that assumption, she basically said he was fat to his face. Part of an entree was asked for with no tomato and the cook still added it- maybe that was the server's mistake but she never checked back in with us. A whole entree was also forgotten and we tried to get the server's attention but she was so busy with being understaffed and was rather flippant about it when we brought it to her attention while paying. I can excuse a lot of that based on being understaffed, but a pretty poor experience...
