Our preconceived notions shape our perceptions, which in turn shape our realities. Sometimes, these realities can limit personal growth. However, personal growth can help broaden our preconceived notions, bringing us full circle to concepts like "vegan" food. Chef Cynthia Beavers, a dedicated chef who has helped bring vegan cuisine to Tulsa, not to push "ethical" or "environmental" ideas but to provide excellent, healthy food to Tulsa with care and love. With an open mind and an insatiable appetite, I walked into Pure Food + Juice to broaden my preconceived notions. Let's eat. Pure Food + Juice (PFJ) has a welcoming, modern feel, with high ceilings and a predominantly white-toned interior. The service is excellent and was provided by a lovely young man, Jake, and Chef Beavers! Both exude enthusiasm for their craft and guests, creating a welcoming atmosphere. PFJ features an assortment of cold-pressed juices and smoothies. For our drinks, we enjoyed the Cherry Limeade, The Bull, and Green Buddha. Each juice is impressive, with complex flavors where each fruit or vegetable shines through. The diversity and flavor profiles of each juice combination are impressive and masterfully crafted. We also tried the Birthday Cake smoothie, which was decadent and delightful. For the first course, we had Layered Nachos with tortilla chips, black beans, queso, guacamole, pico de gallo, and avocado. The "queso" made from red peppers and cashew butter, has a beautiful nutty flavor. The nachos are excellent, with flavors including black bean, nutty queso, and avocado. The salsa adds a vibrant, refreshing taste of tomato and onion. Next, the "Taco Soup" features veggie taco meat, black and pinto beans, poblano, cilantro, and Mexican spices. This soup is hearty and rich, with a silky smooth texture and a spicy, smoky flavor from cumin and beans. The third course is the Watermelon Gazpacho with tomato, red onion, cilantro, lime, and jalapeno. This soup is a revelation, akin to some soups at Michelin-quality restaurants. Its vibrant notes of watermelon, tomato, onion, lime, and cilantro work in harmony, making it a pièce de résistance. The final appetizer is the "Lotus Spring Roll" with avocado, spinach, red pepper, carrot, zucchini, and crunchy cashews. This dish is light and refreshing, with crisp textures and flavors. Each vegetable had a moment to shine, complemented by nutty almond butter. For entrees, we had the Mediterranean Buddha Bowl, featuring salad, jasmine rice, garbanzo beans, hummus, quinoa tabouli, babaganoush, and a creamy herb dressing. This bowl is packed with vibrant, refreshing flavors. We also tried the "Enchiladas with Queso," with black beans in corn tortillas topped with queso, pico, and guacamole. This is a beautiful take on the classic Mexican dish. The final entree, "Pasta! Pasta! Pasta!" features zucchini noodles with alfredo, marinara, and pesto sauces, each with distinct and rich flavor profiles. We sampled three desserts: Coconut Dream, Key Lime Pie, and Chocolate Dream, each with a coconut or avocado base. One critique is the slightly grainy texture of the Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Dream, but this adds a raw quality. Walking into Pure Food + Juice, I was influenced by preconceived notions. However, my perspective transformed from the first sip to the last bite. Each dish ranged from very good to excellent, with the watermelon gazpacho reaching pièce de résistance territory. Each bite shifted my perceptions of vegan food to something broader and bolder. Allowing myself to be guided by Chef Beavers led me on a culinary journey. Vegan food is good food, crafted by those who respect ingredients, cook with passion, and share love with others. I encourage you to give Pure Food + Juice a try and allow Chef Beavers to welcome you into a world where healthy food transcends...
Read moreStopped by Saturday night after a 13 hour road trip. Still had another couple of hours to go by the time we reached Tulsa before arriving at our destination. I have a tough digestive disease, which is my reason behind avoiding fast food at all costs. Luckily, Pure Food and Juice was opened, so I ordered online to grab and go.
Please update your hours. Saturday hours on google said that you were opened until 10pm, and at 9:25 when I arrived to grab my meal everything was dim and locked. I knocked on the door, made eye contact with two workers, and they ignored me. I understand this; I have worked long days in retail, and we do not cater to patrons AFTER hours (but the hours on google said you were still opened- PLEASE update your hours if this is wrong! I am NOT from Tulsa and wouldn't know otherwise!). While standing outside the door I called them, and thankfully someone answered and ran my food out to me saying, "usually the delivery service uses the back entrance" and promptly shut the door, leaving me no time to respond/explain my situation ("Hi- so sorry to keep you late; your hours on google reflect that you're still opened! I'll keep this in mind next time I'm coming through Tulsa. I've been on the road for 13 hours and was so excited to see healthy options still available so late. Thank you for running my food out to me!" was what I wanted to say). I would NOT have inconvenienced anyone if I had known that they were closed!!!
Here's my reasoning behind my review: If you're still opened at 9:25pm for grab and go, be polite to patrons. If you don't have time for them...fake it and pretend like you do. Don't lock customers out, run the food out and explain the rules of delivery service to a paying customer. Also- this made me feel like delivery services also aren't valued customers. I paid the price for this since it was the only healthy option opened at 9:25pm, but no way are these prices justifiable or sustainable. I lived in Austin for years swimming in a sea of healthy, high-quality food and ample options; not once did I feel like I needed to take out a small mortgage to pay for a vegetable-based entree. I don't choose healthy foods out of a pretentious, self-aggrandizing desire to "eat clean". I literally don't have the choice because of my health. Paying $19 for a single entree felt...wrong. The food was good with good quality. $19 for one entree good? Hell no. Honestly though...honestly...I would pay it again and treat myself if I felt like I was supporting a small business and became friends with the owner. The taste is the only reason why this review isn't fewer stars.
This is the only poor review I've ever written.
P.S. If your hours were correct and that's how you treat your patrons DURING hours...get it together! People are paying high quality dollars for your high quality food- the least you could do is say, "Is there anything else I can get for you? Thanks for...
Read morePure Food and Juice is a gift to Tulsa. I can not emphasize enough how special it is to have a raw vegan cafe and juice bar available to us here in the Midwest. I have purposely traveled out of state to eat at places like this so you can imagine my delight when I found out Pure food and Juice opened in Tulsa! The juices and smoothies are delicious and the meals are incredible! I have been a student of nutrition for the last 3.5 years and have cured myself of many autoimmune disorders by changing my diet to include daily raw food and frequent juice cleanses. Preparing raw vegan food requires the freshest produce, a great amount of work and tremendous skill--which is required to make satisfying raw versions of cooked favorites. Cynthia Beavers has perfected this and the food is not only delicious, but beautiful, as well. It is wonderful to be able to visit this cafe and not always have to do all the work myself! As I write this, I am four days into the 21 Day Spring Cleanse (which is an excellent value, by the way). I have purchased juice cleanses from juice bars and prepared my own many times. These juices are definitely more delicious and satisfying than any I have ever had before, so I highly recommend giving it a try! Well, in case it isn't already obvious, I am so incredibly excited about this place and fully intend on becoming a life long customer! Thank you, Pure Food and Juice and Cynthia Beavers, for making me...
