Despite its moniker, Fox's Hole in the Wall is anything but that. Nestled in a downtown historic building on Princess Street, the bar/restaurant features eclectic photos and beautiful exposed brick walls. I almost hesitated posting about this place because it's such a "hidden" treasure that I fear for the inevitable explosion of popularity that is to come- once the secret is revealed. Fox's is a tiny place, with a fairly good-sized bar and a few tables for the patrons (like me) who are obsessed with their food. Mixed drink lovers can get a plethora of options, while wine drinkers like myself have a few choices, but all quite good. The real star of Fox's is their food. My god, the food! I have been there twice thus far (will be back again and again) and have had the Smash Burger and the Sunday Savior (insanely delicious fried chicken sandwich). Both times my husband has had their Boston Beef sandwich, and raves "best beef sandwich I have EVER had!" When I saw the Sunday Savior on my plate, I demurely said that there was no way I could finish a sandwich that large. I cut that gorgeous monster into two pieces (it literally was too large to hold in one piece) and one crispy, juicy bite after another followed until my plate was completely empty. I feel I could've eaten another; it was that good. The staff both times at the establishment were friendly and attentive- my wine glass never went empty until I was ready, and overall the place just has a good vibe. If you live in Wilmington like we do- what are you waiting for?.... this may be the best bar food in the entire city. If you are coming to our beautiful city for a visit- plan a lunch or dinner in a hole in the wall that is anything but. Trust me, you...
Read moreI don’t leave many reviews but what just happened I feel needs to be addressed and rectified. I was planning on placing an Uber Eats order as I have done a couple times in the past week. I was going to order the Pounder BLT. The first time I ordered it it was good but the thick cut bacon was hard and I don’t have many teeth left so I was unable to eat the entire sandwich. The next time I ordered, I called ahead and asked that they make sure the bacon was soft, not crispy, and they kindly obliged. It was an excellent sandwich! I called again tonight to make the same request. I believe a guy named Dave answered the phone and when I asked if he would ask the kitchen to make sure the bacon was soft, he said “the bacon is precooked,” and left it at that. I was taken aback. I’m thinking to myself, “well, can’t they cook some fresh bacon to ensure that it’s soft, so I’m able to eat??” Or “can’t they pick out the softest pieces of cooked bacon and use them??” It’s not like I called as they were closing. Really bad customer service tonight guys! I wanted to spend money at your business and was basically told “go screw yourself.” Dave can’t accommodate a simple request to ensure his patron can enjoy his meal. That’s REALLY unfortunate. I tend to be a creature of habit and order from the same places a couple times a week. You guys lost a new customer, who up to that point had ordered twice in the past week. That’s quite a bit of business you just lost. It sucks that the service sucks because the food is good. I hate to leave a...
Read moreI’ve been a Wilmington local for 21 years and discovered this hidden gem a couple of years ago. The food has always been amazing, and I’ve never had a bad experience—until tonight. I brought my partner to brag about the place, but we were treated so poorly I nearly left in tears.
It was a busy night with only one staff member working, so I made a point to be patient and told the bartender to take our order whenever he had time. Despite arriving earlier, a larger group that walked in 10 minutes after us was served first. When I ordered what I believed was one of the roast beef sandwiches, I wasn’t asked to clarify between the two listed on the menu. When my food arrived, it was missing basic ingredients like tomato, lettuce, and mayo. My partner kindly pointed it out, and while they initially said they’d make a new one, the bartender then turned to me and asked, “Well, what are we going to do about it?” I was confused but responded calmly, asking what the options were. He replied, “Well, you’re not getting a free sandwich if you want another one.”
As someone who works in the service industry, I was stunned. I was respectful and patient the entire time—I didn’t come in looking for a free meal, just the correct order. The tone and treatment in front of a full bar left me embarrassed and hurt. I’ve loved this place for years, but sadly, after tonight’s experience, I won’t...
