K&W Cafeteria — Restaurant in Winston-Salem

I have to say, I have visited K W numerous times over the past 30 years, and this experience was certainly unlike any of the others, which is not a superlative in this situation.

I stopped because I needed a quick bite to eat after helping a friend do some yard work. When I got there, there was no one in line, save for one woman in front of me who could not make a decision to save her life, which is no fault of K&W’s. But I was trying to get some food, and the associates behind the counter were not being very helpful or attentive.

It was near the end of the night, so they were out or low on a few things, and I totally get that, and do not hold them at fault for this- as I came in around 45 to 30 minutes before close. But, I was still able to get what I desired, country-style steak with rice, okra, and mac & cheese. When I got to the register, I was in for a shock as this meal was over $20. Now, I am sorry, but one of the pillars of K&W is cheaper eats. Had I wanted to spend $20 on a meal, I would have chosen a better place to do so. That price point is going to kill them, as no one wants to pay that sorta price for that level of food. I knew what kinda food I was going to find when I went there, but I did not expect to have to pay that ridiculous fee for that dinner. I am well aware that $20 is no longer considered much, but charging over $20 for one person to dine at K&W is absolutely absurd.

That being said- he service was great and the employees were nice, and honestly the food was okay- but $20 is to high, and I will not be spending my money there,...

We have been going to K&W for decades especially this location off Hanes Mill road. The place has always been packed and for good reason but last night was different. We got there a few minutes after 5 to a nearly empty parking lot on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. This alone was a red flag but we went in and nobody was in line but our group and I immediately saw the problem. At dinner time and the food was lunch leftovers and very little of that! We had trouble picking something that looked edible. Party of 4 and half of us had cold dry food! This was my mother’s favorite place and it was her birthday or I would have left immediately. I noticed you now pay at the end of the line instead of at leaving 😂I wonder why 🤔I didn’t make a scene because it was a birthday and the people working there don’t make the decisions that WILL shut this place down. We left at 6:15 and it was just about as empty as before. They have obviously made an economic decision in their business and I suggest you do the same. $70. For what was a hot fresh $45 meal 2 years ago. Don’t buy old cold...

I absolutely love this restaurant. My family visited is that restaurant every Tuesday for the last 3 years because they had a special that kids eat free with one paying adult. Let me explain more one paying adult tutu free kids meal with dine-in only. However I learned that the restaurant has closed this particular location. I'm sure this is due to volume. As covid has hit all of us in so many different ways including businesses. Also the special of Tuesday's kids eat free is no longer available at any other operating location. And I am completely fine with that they need to salvage their business they need every dollar to be able to keep open and keep the employees they have so I still will be participating on taking my family to this restaurant because the food is good it's a family fun environment and I have so many good memories with my children over the last 3 years at this restaurant.
