Welcoming in December with this snowy scene of Balmoral Castle. Balmoral Castle has origins dating back to the reign of King Robert II of Scotland (1316–1390), who had a hunting lodge in the area. Records also indicate that a house at Balmoral was built by Sir William Drummond in 1390. The estate is recorded in 1451 as “Bouchmorale”, and later was tenanted by Alexander Gordon, second son of the 1st Earl of Huntly. In 1662 the estate passed to Charles Farquharson of Inverey. The Farquharsons, as Jacobite sympathisers, were involved in both the 1715 and 1745 rebellions. In 1798, James Duff, 2nd Earl Fife, acquired Balmoral. Robert Gordon, a younger brother of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, acquired the lease in 1830, making major alterations to the original castle, including baronial-style extensions that were designed by John Smith of Aberdeen. In 1852 Balmoral Castle became the Scottish home of the Royal Family after it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert. From then onwards, the castle has remained a beloved home to successive monarchs. In particular, Queen Elizabeth II held great affection for Balmoral Castle. It was well known to be her favourite home, a place where she could enjoy the tranquility and freedom of the surroundings. Queen Elizabeth II spent her final days at the castle, passing away there earlier this year. 📽️: @castlesofscotland + caption 📍: @balmoral_castle _____________________________ Don’t forget to follow @simply.scotland Share your adventures at: #simplyscotland Follow our adventures at @LaTravelGirl + @Craig_McStay _____________________________ #scotlandtrip #scotlandtravel #scotlandisnow #historicscotland #discoverscotland #scotlandphotography #scottishscenery #lovescotland #ilovescotland #thisisscotland #scotlandlover #explorescotland #hiddenscotland #scotlandsbeauty #instascotland #travel #highlands #scotlandpics #scotland #castle #blizzard #snowing #winterwonderland #aberdeen #december #snow #christmas #snowday #festive

This sing was posted outside of Balmoral Castle in Scotland where the queen died on Thursday. With the her death comes the first time most of the world will see a new monarch ascend to the British throne. So what happens next? Tap the link in our bio to read about Operation Unicorn, the highly detailed protocol regarding her funeral arrangements and the transfer of power.

We've been in the grounds several times - mainly when the entrance fee was waived following the death of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Now everyone has to pay for an entrance ticket which gets you an audio guide, access to the grounds and a small tour of the castle. We have young kids so audio guides and castle tours are of no use to us - we just like to walk about the gardens enjoying the beautiful estate. It's a pity there isn't a tiered entry system where there's free access for those like us who like to roam, all the way up to a full price ticket for those who want the audio guide and castle entry. Anyway, we did see value in the recent family outdoor cinema event on 11 August as the entry cost also included screenings of Paddington and Matilda the musical on the lawn. Many others must've thought the same and so they headed to Balmoral castle en mass. It was chaos in the carparks as people searched for spaces. It wasn't clear to us what the car parking instructions were. For example given that we had a car full of small kids, picnic gear and the likes would we be able to park inside the grounds? The answer was no, but again many others must've thought the same as they tried to weave their cars up to the gate only to be redirected back to the main car park. Because of this it was pandemonium on the entrance bridge with cars, buses and people negotiating the narrow bridge in both directions. Clear, simple car parking instructions were needed from Balmoral Estate as well as providing several car park attendants (it was astonishing that there were none). After the disappointing car park experience once inside the gardens the cinema setup was great. I mean what's not to like about watching Paddington having a picnic in glorious sunshine on the kings own lawn?

Me and a friend visited Her Majesty The Queen's Official Summer Scottish Residence that is, 'Balmoral Castle' in May 2019. :) Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1848, the Balmoral Castle and Estate has been the home of the UK Royal Family ever since, and is very impressive indeed. :) The whole Estate comprises some 50,000 acres of heather hills, pine forests, estate garden grounds and the lovely River Dee. Today the Royal Family have very carefully managed the Estate to provide the visitor with a very unique experience and insight into Royal Family Life here in Scotland. :) The Estate is approx. 50 miles from Aberdeen and is open daily, from 1st April until 31st July 2019. (10am until 5pm). Parking is free, and Disabled Persons Access is excellent throughout. As a Disabled Visitor, I was allowed to park my car at The Estate Office, right beside The Castle, and paid £10.50 for my ticket. :) I visited the lovely Castle Grounds, Gardens, The Ballroom with the Queen Victoria (200 years since her birth) Exhibition for 2019 and The Cafe and Gift Shop. :) Toilet Facilities Etc are also Excellent. As a final note, it should be said that my visit was really lovely and highly enjoyable and the actual setting of the Balmoral Castle is what really astounded me! Truly beautiful and spectacular Scottish scenery is on display here! :) In my opinion, a visit to Balmoral should not be missed! Enjoy! :)
