Lake Murray: A Hidden Gem for Weekday Getaways
Lake Murray offers a peaceful retreat, especially on weekdays when it's less crowded. With picnic tables, plenty of shade, and a designated swimming area, it’s perfect for a relaxing day by the water. There's also a free lifejacket rack for safety, which is a thoughtful touch for families. While the weekends can get busy, weekdays, particularly when kids are in school, offer a much more serene experience, making it a great option for homeschooling families looking for a quiet escape.

Although the parking is limited and the bathroom facilities are basic, the overall experience is well worth it. The area also offers hiking trails, an ATV park, and ample camping opportunities—just be sure to visit during the off-season to avoid the crowds. Read moreWe actually stayed at a different campsite on Lake Murray, but it was close to Sunset Beach. We visited this beach, but didn’t swim since we could swim where our site was. However, I am still reviewing it because we did walk up to it and took a good look around.
This appears to be a great beach, especially for those with children. The beach and the swim area are quite large. People were able to spread out nicely in the water and not be too close to other groups of people. Some people brought canopy tents for shade, some were grilling, etc. There are private flush toilets and showers as well.
The reason for the four stars is due to parking. The lot for day use is large, you can only park in certain slots and there aren’t that many. I’m assuming they do this so that the campers at Sunset Beach aren’t overrun by day use folks. However, it is unfortunate if you just want to swim at this beach and all of the parking spots are...
Read moreThis is a great little spot for a relaxing day. The beach isn't very large but does have a few small pockets of sandy area. The park has a few parking spots but fills up quickly on warm summer weekends. They have roughly a dozen above-ground charcoal grills and cement picnic tables. There is no running water and only vault-style toilets. A basic playground is also on-site. There is a designated swimming area and the water is relatively shallow - about waist deep at roughly 50 feet from shore. The lake bottom is a mix of sand and soil, with pockets of vegetation (outside the swimming area) so I recommend water shoes or sandals. The water is cool most of the year but warm enough to swim in, though rather murky. Visibility is no more than a few inches. Scenery at the park is good - plenty of trees on the lakeshore and great views across the water. Sunsets here can be quite...
