220,000,000 years ago… These trees were alive with dinosaurs! Over time they fell into a river, got buried by sediment, turned to stone, and now they’re Petrified 🪵😱 [AD] This intriguing National Park splits Arizona high grassland and the Painted Desert, named by Cortez and his explorers. At the park you’ll also find badlands layered in bentonite clay, petroglyphs, ruins, fossils, and wilderness. If you have time to head west of the park, Homolovi State Park is 30 min away and is home to Hopi structures and kivas built 600-700 years ago along the Little Colorado River 🚮Please #AppreciateAZ and LNT 🚫🪵Collecting petrified wood in the National Park is illegal 🎟️ Entrance fee required at Petrified Forest NP and Homolovi SP 🕰️specific hours of operation at PFNP 🚗both parks are suitable for all cars ⛺️Camping available at Homolovi SP 📍 Photos taken on lands native to the Diné Bikéyah, Pueblos, and Shiwinna (Zuni) people • • • • • #petrifiedforestnationalpark #nationalparks #petrifiedforest #visitarizona #arizona #explorearizona #nationalparkservice #optoutside

We stayed one night at Homolovi while on a cross-country trip. When I made reservations online ahead of time I wasn’t sure if the park daily access fee was included in the camping fee but it was. In mid October the campground seemed pretty full so I’m glad we made reservations. The park is easy to access from the interstate. The roads in the campground are one way and the pull through camping sites have the water and electric located on the passenger side which makes hooking up a little inconvenient. Also the tree branches prevented you from getting very close to the hook ups. The views there are great and it was so peaceful that I wish I had planned to stay another day. The site had a fire ring and another fire ring/grill combo and a picnic table. We had 50-amp service and the pedestal was in good condition. Even though AT&T showed 3 bars I couldn’t place calls or access the Internet. We only got a few channels on antenna TV. I saw park rangers drive through the campground a couple of times which is always a good thing. If I were passing through this area again I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again at Homolovi. UPDATE We stayed again at Homolovi State Park Campground site 24 in a 36’ 5th wheel camper. It was just as pleasant as the first time. Getting there off the interstate is easy. When we went to the visitor center to check in they were closed. We already had reservations that we made online. We paid $30 a night plus a $5 reservation fee for a pull through site with water and 50 amps electric. The roads in the campground are asphalt and it’s easy to maneuver in the campground, even with a large camper. The site pad is asphalt too and had plenty of room. The camper connections are on the curb side for all the pull through sites. I had 3 bars of cell service with AT&T and my wife had 4 bars of Verizon. Homolavi is a nice peaceful place to stay whether for a single night on a trip or for several days. This was our second stay there and we would come back again. If you’re an Eagles fan or just like site seeing, check out the Standin’ On The Corner Park in nearby Winslow and take some pictures.

Homolovi State Park is located in the high desert, near Winslow, in Northern AZ and was created in cooperation with the Hopi community to help protect and preserve ancestral sites. There's an RV campground with 50+ well maintained, asphalt sites, spaced far enough apart to ensure privacy. There are a few non-electric spaces, but most have 30 amp power and water and a few have 50 amp service. Somethe sites include 10 x 10 tent pads. My site was dead level side to side and I only noticed one trailer using leveling blocks. There is a dump and water station at the campground entrance. Two archeology sites along the Little Colorado River are accessable by trails. The trail to the larger site is paved, allowing wheelchair access, but be aware that it's just under a 1/2 mile of a pretty good grade so plan accordingly. Once at the top, I found an excavated section of a living area and a kiva. Most interesting to me were the pottery shards spread around on the ground. The night sky is dark enough to see the Milky Way which was a treat for this city dweller and the visitor center has an observatory that hosts monthy star viewing events - check the website for details. I missed it, but I'll come back. Winslow is about 3 miles away, "I'm standing on a corner in...", yes, that Winslow, AZ. There are fun classic rock music, Route 66 and railroad themed attractions.

Overall, this a very clean, easy to navigate, and enjoyable park. Pull through sites big enough to easily accommodate our 65ft rig. Do be warned that large sites tend to have the hookups on the wrong side and pushed back toward the entry of the pad, so bring long hoses to hook up with. All sites are asphalt pads with a fire ring and picnic table. There is well maintained foliage in different areas and campsites. Sites are close, but not on top of each other. We found the restrooms to be very clean. Showers are older and not quite as nice, but not the worst we have seen. Sites are electric only or water and electric, there is sewar at any site, but there is a very clean, easy to use dump station. We arrived on a Sunday and stayed 3 days. We found the park to be VERY quiet and allowed for private exploration whether on foot or bicycle. The visitor center and Homolovi I Archaeological sites are within 1.5mi of the campground so a nice walk, but also easily drivable. Homolovi II is several miles from the campground and may be better suited for a drive for most people. This is also a short drive to downtown Winslow, AZ, which is a wonderful afternoon outing. At about $30/night this is an excellent value, if you want to see wildlife, hike and/or bike, and just relax. Do know that it does not have a playground or other children dedicated amenities.

It looks like most of the reviews here are about camping. We went to visit as a State Park to learn more about Homovoli. After paying, I asked about the pronunciation and the female employee just turned away from me. From across the gift shop Ken (I would later learn his name) announced the proper pronunciation and shared some history and meaning of the name. We went outside to work on the Junior Ranger books and my parents asked her a question. She was friendly and detailed with them. We went back in to turn in their Ranger books and she said “here” and pushed the badges to the kids. My parents were disappointed because it was their first time at a park with them and they had wanted to see the kids do the oath. After exploring for a bit, we went in one last time because I had a question about the map. I got as far as, “hi” and she sighed and said, “ken can you help them?” Ken was very helpful with the directions we needed. I’m not sure why our presence seemed to offend the woman; unless asking how to pronounce something is offensive. Anyway, we hiked out to the little cemetery and then drove out to see some of the other ruins. Not as much to see as other state parks.

This is a great gem very peaceful. Located just off the highway with easy access. The sites are roomy and on blacktop. You can choose from back in or pull thru. The water is shut off during the winter, no problem. Fill your tank upon entering near the dump station. Sites range from no electricity, 30 amp, 50 amp. No sewer, but there is a easy to maneuver dump station. There are some pretty interesting trails to explore and get an up close view of Hopi life, and a small visitor center. Easy access to Winslow and 35 miles to the Holbrook entrance to the Petrified Forest National Park, which is wonderful. Check with the park, currently the highway in the Petrified Forest is closed a few miles in, entering in at either entrance for bridge work. This should change in March to oneway traffic in this area. You will see beautiful sunrises and sunsets her at the Homolovi park and lots of stars at night. The showers were good, but the heater was ineffective. Nice park, well maintained and felt safe.
