It will cost you about 10 American dollars and about 10-15 minutes from the Bole airport to arrive at this this fairly new, quaint, simple but modern hotel with 6 floors including the balcony. I would say it's equivalent to a Holiday Inn in the states.
After much consideration, I booked my room for a week here and have not regretted my decision. If you're planning to stay in Addis for any long period of time and need an affordable, no thrilles, but nice place to stay with clean sheets, a decent view of the city, a central location, great staff and free breakfast- then I would definitely stay here. But if you're looking for something fancy, this is not the place for you. . . . . . Positives: Near the airport and City center Clean, modern new building w granite staircase and 6th floor balcony w a beautiful view of City Cable television w CNN and Ethio TV Great staff who keep the rooms and sheets clean. Receptionists speak English and are kind and friendly Massage available for less than 15 American dollars Free breakfast, and can make delicious omletes Showers are clean w Hot water, good pressure Free internet w good connection. Note: if you have a hard time connecting in your hotel room, restart your device. If that doesn't work, ask them to restart the modem. Finally, if that doesn't work, have them change the password. The latter worked for me. Gaurd outside protecting and watching the area. The price can't be beat. The nearby hotels are more expensive and don't include the free breakfast. Plus the hotels are older and rundown in comparison. I felt like I was taking a chance with the other places. But this place has received consistently good reviews and keeps American style hotel standards. Lots of internationals and business folks were staying here. Beds are FIRM! I actually enjoyed it, but some may like a slightly softer mattress. I slept great every night here. The view from the balcony is really nice, and working out up there in the morning is really refreshing. The bathrooms are clean. Once you get around Addis you will really appreciate a clean bathroom at your hotel. . . . . Negatives: The surrounding area is a little shabby, but that will change as the area grows. Don't let the bad road to the hotel deter you. It's down the street from a mechanic shop for taxis and is surrounded by low income homes. But it's safe and I enjoyed the friendly people in the surrounding area. Taxi cabs will not know how to get here since it's fairly new. So ask them if they know Blue Bird hotel (down the street) or Yonas hotel. Or tell them, Hiya welete or 22 in English. It will get you fairly close to the hotel. Download a map before you leave to help find the hotel. No elevator, however the staff were more than happy to help with the luggage. However, I'd still stay on the upper flowers to enjoy the nice views and be further away from the ground noise. The rooms are not your American gigantic rooms you may be use to. They are clean, small, but nice. Again, don't expect anything super fancy. It's similar to a Holiday Inn. Beds are FIRM! I actually enjoyed it, but some may like a slightly softer mattress. I slept great every night here. The towels are slightly thin, and don't absorb much.
Overall, great place for a...
Read moreI discovered Ag Palace Hotel after browsing through reviews and rankings on tripadvisor. Ag Palace Hotel seemed like good value for the price. Reviews about the hotel's Internet connection were fairly good, which is important to me since I require reliable Internet connection for my line of work. ||||After checking into my room at about 6 PM I noticed the TV was very small (about 24 inches or less resembling a computer monitor) and only a couple of channels were operational. Moreover, the sliding door next to my fourth floor balcony would not completely close, slightly causing cold air to enter the room. Most importantly, the WiFi in my room was non-functional on both my laptop and smart phone. ||||I notified the receptionist who asked me to come downstairs to check if the WiFi worked for me in the restaurant, lobby, and/or first floor. The Internet connection was intermittent downstairs and very slow with an average speed of less than 50 KB/s (kilobytes per second). The receptionist tried resetting the Internet connection, which did not make a difference. Then her supervisor or manager came over and they both informed me that the WiFi worked fine on their mobile phone. I'm not sure what they consider "fine", but the web pages on my laptop would not completely load at less than 50 KB/s. ||||After spending close to an hour trying to sort out Internet connection problems I decided Ag Palace Hotel was not worth my time or money and I asked the receptionist and supervisor/manager to provide me with a refund, but they refused. The two said they couldn't refund my money since I booked online, which made no sense to me. ||||As I exited the hotel at about 7:30 PM, there were no taxi cabs in sight and no street lights on the unpaved road next to the hotel. I asked the security guards if one of them could help me find a taxi cab near the main road, but they said they were not supposed to leave the premise. I went back inside the hotel and asked the receptionist if someone could help guide me to the main road so I could find a taxi cab. She jokingly asked me if I was scared to which I replied that I didn't feel safe on an unlit and unpaved road in Addis Ababa after dark. The receptionist then offered to have another hotel worker guide me to the main road. ||||Later the same night, I booked a room at the Monarch Hotel in Bole where I actually found relatively high-speed Internet access. The average speed at the Monarch Hotel was at least 500 KB/s, which is ten times faster than Ag Palace Hotel. Overall, my experience was horrible at Ag Palace Hotel and I will not be returning. I hope this experience was an isolated incident and not representative of Ag...
Read moreThis summer I popped on Addis Ababa as a tourist. Partly, I stayed at AG Palace Hotel, which I had booked online. The location is close to the center and very easy to reach. The Taxi driver who picked me from Bole Air Port was quite familiar with the location of the hotel. It took us about 15-20 minutes to get there for around 270 Birr (nearly 10 USD).
The place offers almost everything a customer expects from a hotel including free delicious breakfast. Occasionally, the owners of the hotel pay a surprise visit during breakfast time to evaluate and enhance customer satisfaction. Rooms are pretty clean, spacious and adequately furnished with basic facilities. There is no reason to worry that the hot water would stop while you are standing in the box shower.
The staff are horrifically nice and friendly. The guards, the receptionists, the cooks and the cleaners work in harmony to the satisfaction of the customers. Their sense of responsibility is amazing.
I stayed there almost one enjoyable week at arrival to Addis Ababa and before departure to Europe. Meanwhile, I travelled to various parts of the country and my vacation got completed. I would certainly stay at this standard hotel again when I decide to come back to Addis Ababa.
The only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars is because part of the road (approximately 50 meters) that leads to the hotel from the main asphalt road is gravel (rough) and taxi drivers face a bit of hardship there. According to reliable sources, however, the surrounding is working to fix this...
