Tepelena Castle — Attraction in Bashkia Tepelenë

The Castle of Tepelene, was proclaimed Cultural Monument of first category in 1963 and is situated in the North of the city of Tepelene, Municipality of Tepelene. According to historical resources, the castle was envisioned from Ali Pasha Tepelena itself, who had supervised the first stages of construction of this heroic symbol of the region. The existing castle was rebuilt from him in 1819 with a surface of 5.5 ha, with three entrances and three towers. Until 1820 it was used as the second residence of Ali Pasha Tepelena. The walls of the castle are attached to the natural shape of the ground and do not consist of a regular geometrical form. Tepelena castle was wonderful. A taste of the old history of Albania. This castle was build and owned by a very famous big Albanian landlord of the 1800s. Back than Albanian territories where under the Ottoman Empire dominion. Ali Pasha was not a common landlord, he often used to create rebellions against the Ottoman Empire. He had lots of ties with the European Kingdoms including Napoleon Bonaparte. He used to arrange ties to make sure that his rebellions would be supported by these allies and he would gain the total independence from the Ottomans. Tepelena is the cleanest Town we have visited in our year living in Albania. Actually saw a woman sweeping in front of her cafe. Thought I was in Japan for a fleeting moment. Also the back road to Vlore (west past commie death camp) is Beautiful scenery, SPECTACULAR. It almost looks like an ancient Roman Road where the pavemnet ends. We were told only High Clearance vehicle can make it. We turned around. There is an ancient Castle where pavement ends. Not sure about any details. Do this drive on a motorcycle if you can! 5 Stars...
