I enjoyed the experience itself because I'm happy that animal species are cared for in a dedicated place and not left to total abandonment. Unfortunately, however, there are many negative aspects to the experience: 1) the place presents difficulties in the journey (the road is long, unpaved and with few areas to allow other cars to pass being the two-way street). In the summer it's difficult with the extreme heat and insects getting into the car; 2) There are relatively few facilities for bird-watching and not equipped with binoculars or other instruments suitable for the purpose of observing these wonderful animals. 3) We could see pink and white flamingos and herons from afar, but not turtles or eels. If there had been more signs and signals, or guides, perhaps it would have been easier identify them. 4) The landscape and cradle of animals, presents areas of total abandonment and pollution and rubbish of all kinds: from plastic bottles, to whole bags of rubbish, to glass and bones of others animals. Yes, they're decomposing, so they've been there for a long time. It's sad to see something like this. In some areas the smell was so pungent that we had to leave. 5) Many areas are inaccessible by car, on foot, or in a wheelchair. Therefore, despite the vastness of the landscape, the visitable area remains small and the animals are distant.
In any case, I hope that the situation will be improved both in terms of road conditions and accessibility for visits, but first of all, apart from opening to tourists, the fundamental thing is the care of the animals, protagonists of the place.
From the dirt road it was then possible to reach the nearby beach, which we enjoyed, but where there was too much rubbish left in the environment.

Read more5 stars for the nature. You can see flamingos and lots of other birds here. This area should be protected at all costs. Unfortunately there's garbage everywhere, car tires in the water, bottles and lots of plastic everywhere, people that visit this area don't respect nature at all. There's a beautiful pine forest arround the lake and it's full of trash, also the beach in this area is wild with fine sand and water but also full of trash. Police does nothing, goverment does nothing to prevent the pollution of this beautiful place. What can I say, human nature at it's best, total ignorance from the local...
Read moreI haven't yet experienced this place but have recently become aware of it when I read Kushner (Trump's son-in-law for the non-Americans) is looking into resort development in the area with the Albanian government. Please, if any Albanian government officials are reading this - don't do it! Your pristine delta will bring tourism and pride to your country in the future as spots like this disappear. Don't just add another wasteful resort for the global wealthy. Nature in the end will be more valuable...
