Ananuri Fortress Complex Ananuri Fortress complex is a stunning historical and architectural monument that dates back to the 16th-18th centuries. It is located on the banks of the Aragvi River, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. The complex consists of two castles, three churches, a defensive wall, and several towers. It was the residence of the Aragvi feudal dynasty, who ruled the region for centuries and fought against various invaders. The fortress witnessed many battles, sieges, massacres, and revolts, and survived fire and destruction. It is a testament to the courage and resilience of the Georgian people. The complex offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and the Zhinvali reservoir, which is a popular destination for water sports and fishing. The fortress is easily accessible by car or bus from Tbilisi, and there are several hotels and guesthouses nearby for accommodation. The entrance fee is 5 GEL (about 1.5 USD) per person, and there are guides available for an additional fee. The main attractions of the complex are: The Church of the Assumption, built in 1689, which features a carved grapevine cross on its facade and beautiful frescoes inside. The church also contains the tombs of some members of the Aragvi dynasty. The Church of St. George, built in 1647, which has a simple stone exterior and a richly decorated interior with icons and paintings. The Church of St. Nicholas, built in 1733, which is located in the lower castle and has a distinctive bell tower. The Sheupovari Tower, which is the highest point of the complex and offers a panoramic view of the area. It was used as a watchtower and a last resort defense during sieges. The secret tunnel, which was used to supply water and food to the fortress during attacks. It is said that a woman named Ana from Nuri sacrificed her life to protect the secret of the tunnel from the enemy. Ananuri Fortress complex is a must-see for anyone interested in Georgian history, culture, and architecture. It is a place where you can feel the spirit of the past and admire the beauty of nature. It is also a great spot for taking photos and enjoying a picnic. I highly recommend visiting this amazing site if you are in Georgia. I appreciate your support. Ananuri Fortress Complex is an integral part of any Georgian day trip itinerary, and rightfully so. This historical site offers visitors a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Georgia's past, coupled with a stunning backdrop of natural beauty. The complex itself exudes an aura of antiquity, with its ancient stone walls and turrets that have stood the test of time. Exploring the various chambers and walkways, you'll find yourself transported to an era of knights and nobility. The historical significance of Ananuri is palpable, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. However, it's worth noting that while the fortress complex is undeniably captivating, some areas require caution. Much of the structure shows signs of wear and tear, and navigating certain sections can be a bit challenging. Visitors should tread carefully, especially if mobility is a concern. One piece of advice: while you have the option to ascend to the highest point, the experience may not be as rewarding as anticipated. The ascent is narrow, and once you reach the top, the view is largely obstructed. It's advisable to save your time and energy for exploring the more accessible areas, where you can truly appreciate the charm of Ananuri without the limitations of confined spaces. The real treasure of Ananuri lies in its surroundings. Perched on the banks of the Zhinvali Reservoir, the complex offers panoramic views that are simply breathtaking. The juxtaposition of the fortress against the shimmering waters and lush landscape creates a scene that's nothing short of postcard-perfect. In conclusion, a visit to Ananuri Fortress Complex is a journey through time, a chance to immerse oneself in Georgia's storied past. While some parts of the fortress may require extra care, the historical and scenic allure of this destination makes it a worthwhile addition to any travel itinerary. Don't miss out on the opportunity to witness this unique blend of history and natural beauty.

One of the must-see sites in Georgia! Where the Aragvi River flows into the Zhinvali reservoir, one of the most beautiful fortresses in Georgia is located on the south bank of the reservoir: the Ananuri Fortress. From the 13th to 18th centuries, this was the residence of the eristavis (dukes or princes) of Aragvi, the proud and warlike rulers of the important Aragvi Valley. The castle has often been the scene of battle, for example in 1739 eristavi Bardzim and his family were almost completely massacred by Schansche III, a neighboring rival. The well-preserved castle is probably one of the most impressive Georgian buildings from the era of the Persian and Ottoman invasions. The small area within the walls is home to two churches: the smaller and slightly older Church of the Savior and the Church of the Assumption of Mary (in this church you will find lively frescoes from the 17th and 18th centuries). Anyone who climbs the large western tower (be careful) will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the castle and the surrounding area.

### Ananuri Fortress - A Perfect Historical Stop! Ananuri Fortress is an ideal stop if you’re heading further north in Georgia. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the chapel and the expansive grounds. The fortress boasts two towers, one of which is accessible and features eight floors. This tower played a crucial role in defending against enemies during the active period of the Aragvian kings. Every corner of Ananuri is steeped in history, transporting you back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Outside the church, you’ll find the graves of numerous kings and priests, adding to the historical significance of the site. The fortress also includes a library and various storage areas, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the past.
