Absolutely gorgeous scenery and a beautiful hike to get there. Take a water bottle, dress in layers, and use sun cream. The trail head begins at the end of Avenida San Martín in El Chalten. During the first hour of trekking the path ascends steeple up to a natural viewpoint of the valley of the De las Vueltas river. The trail continues up along the Del Salto stream entering the valley towards Mount Fitz Roy. The trail becomes more flat here and there is an interpretive sign. The path follows always up along the Del Salto stream to the drainage area of Laguna Madre e Hija. You will arrive at Poincenot Base Camp (the most popular camp site in the National Park) and after crossing the Blanco River the trail will ascend steeply for the last kilometer, over 400 m climb. This will require more than an hour of effort. The trail finishes at the ridge of the old frontal moraine of the De los Tres Glacier (enormous formation in the shape of an arch that currently contains the lagoon, formed by the action of the advance and subsequent glacial retreat) with an extraordinary view of the lagoon and De los Tres glacier. This is the closest view to the granite wall of Mount Fitz Roy and the...
Read moreI’m writing this review for anyone who is on the fence about doing this hike.
For the most part, it’s alright but the last one hour is very challenging. But if you have hiking poles, good hiking shoes and take your time, you’ll be fine. The last bit is steep but the path is broad for the major part, so you can go slowly without worrying about holding up a line behind you. There is a little hut before the steep part begins if you would like to rest a bit there before the ascent. Once you get there, the view was pretty good.
The descent was the harder part, I took more time to come down than to go up because I was afraid of injuring my knees or ankles. I had an ankle injury in the past. However, the poles made me feel safer and I finished the whole hike in about 10 hours including a half hour ish lunch break.
If you’re in moderate health, you’ll be fine. Just make sure to have multiple layers of clothing, good shoes and poles and...
Read moreThis is by far the best hike I have ever done- from the distance, the views, and the incredible different scenery. You should base your stay in El Chalten and the best weather day you have around this hike. Here are a few useful tips: Pilar - get a ride to the Pilar dropoff to do the point-to-point hike that is 13.1 miles. So worth it compared to the out and back from Chalten. We are decent hikers and stopped awhile at all the views and it took us 8hrs 20mins. Hiking Poles - bring them, the last trek up the mountain is pretty steep and you'll be the minority if you don't have poles. Hike 5 minutes further than you think - once you get to the top and see the beautiful view of Fitz Roy DO NOT STOP THERE as ts you should hike on top of the mountain next to it (5 minutes max) and see the 2nd lake and a better 360 shot of it all, amazing. Best Weather Day: Plan this hike around the best weather day you have, it'll be...
