Villa Ocampo — Attraction in Beccar

I was very disappointed in the Villa Ocampo. The contents of the house were thoroughly undistinguished and there was a need for appropriate re-decoration of all the rooms on the ground floor. There was no guide book or pamphlet explaining in English the history of the building or the significance ( if any) of the furniture or paintings in the house. The first floor was roped off and only accessible if one was part of a guided tour, (all of which when we were there were in Spanish). There was to attempt to make the kitchen area in the lower ground floor into an interesting visitor experience. In Punto Arenas in Chile the Museum of History Braun Menendez shows what can be done with a building of this age and importance. I have to add that I found the staff at the Villa Ocampo to be officious, ticking one visitor off for sitting on the arms of a sofa which was not of the slightest quality, and asking me not to walk on the grass. ( Why not? This is a garden, not the lawn of an Oxford College...

Las dos estrellas las pongo unicamente porque el lugar es increiblemente maravilloso, el resto y sus mozos genial y la atencion del chico que te recibe en la garita de seguridad tambien... Hicimos la visita guiada y la verdad es que nos fuimos con una sensacion amarga... El guia, Baltazar, un maleducado mal hablado y prepotente... Primero parecia que era un robot, la mitad de las cosas que conto no se entendieron de lo rapido que hablaba... Luego hubieron dos o tres situaciones algo incomodas respecto a la forma de hablarle a las personas... En principio ya arranco mal, resoplando con fastidio cada vez que podia, sin que nadie hiciera nada para provocarlo... En un momento una señora sin querer con el pie toca uno de los palos que sostenia el cordon que delimitaba nuestro paso y le dijo con voz elevada POR FAVOR SEÑORA CUIDADO POR DONDE CAMINA la verdad nos quedamos todos mudos, porque claramente fue sin querer... Otro chico le pregunto sobre un cuadro y le dijo "sobre eso ya te voy a hablar" ... Otro chico le pregunto sobre un cuadro y le dijo "eso lo dije antes" Luego cuando pasamos al segundo piso que teniamos que subir por escaleras, logicamente vamos subiendo en fila y algunas personas llegamos despues y no nos espero, cuando ibamos subiendo escuchamos que ya estaba hablando... Al llegar al salon de arriba , como dije el ya estaba hablando de los libros que leia victoria ocampo la señora señala un libro y dice "ah si tal libro es ese" y nuevamente con voz elevada le dice POR FAVOR NO ME INTERRUMPA SEÑORA , otra vez se hizo un silencio incomodo.... Y luego yo que llegue ultima me hace señas a lo que le contesto, disculpame pero no me estoy apoyando (pensando que se referia a que estaba cerca de un sillon y me dice no no, no pises la alfombra que es un regalo que le hicieron a victoria a lo que le contesto, disculpa no sabia y me dice sisi lo dije cuando llegamos y obvio le dije, lo que pasa es que algunas personas no escuchamos porque estabamos subiendo... Luego que termino la visita algunas personas estaban en el balcon comentando estas incomodidades que surgieron... La verdad una pesima experiencia opacada por el guia.... Una lastima porque uno llego con una expectativa y se fue desespecionado no solo por los tratos de el, si no porque tampoco fue enriquecedora la visita, ya que nadie queria preguntar nada por miedo a sus modos... Uno espera de una visita guiada otra cosa, interacciones, preguntas que enriquecen, informacion que a veces los visitantes mismos pueden aportar etc... La verdad espero que la gente que quiera ir averigue quien sera el guia... Por que si es realizada por él, van a gastar dinero de gusto... Una...

This pleasant house and garden make a worthwhile day trip from central Buenos Aires, especially for anyone with an interest in Victoria Ocampo, feminism or 20th-century literature. Given that the house is run by UNESCO, it was surprising that there was little information in English, and the organisation of the house was somewhat confusing. It was possible to walk around the ground floor without a guide, but there was insufficient information on display for this to be really interesting.
